Join us this Saturday, November 22nd, at the One Ocean Protest in protest to make our voices heard. We are not against commercial fishing or reserves; we support our fishers and their livelihoods. Our fight is against a broken system that prioritizes short sited profit over sustainability and the public resource.
If this is the first time you’re seeing or hearing this here are the major points of concern:
THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN – FIX IT FIRST!
-We cannot responsibly introduce new species into a Quota Management System that is already failing.
-Introducing new species for commercial sale (like Marlin and others) is irresponsible when the current management is clearly not working to protect fish stocks for future generations.
FISH ARE A PUBLICLY OWNED RESOURCE
-Do not allow the government to limit public consultation on the management of this resource. Proposed reforms to set long-term catch limits with minimal consultation are unacceptable.
-The fishery belongs to all New Zealanders, and the management decisions must be transparent and challengeable.
SPEARFISHING: THE MOST SUSTAINABLE WAY TO SOURCE KAI MOANA
-Spearfishing exemplifies a low-impact, selective, and highly sustainable method for harvesting seafood. It ensures we only take what we need and provides food for our tables with minimal bycatch or habitat damage.
PRIORITISE FEEDING NEW ZEALANDERS
-The current system financially incentivizes exporting our precious resource, making fish less affordable and available for Kiwis.
-New Zealanders must be fed first.
NO COMMERCIAL FISHING INSIDE HPAs'
-A marine protection area that allows commercial fishing is not protected. The recent last-minute amendment allowing this misses the entire point of a Habitat Protection Area (HPA).
The time to act is NOW. See you this Saturday, November 22nd starting at Albany Park n Ride 8.30am.
Together, we can protect what we love and demand a system that works for everyone.
