The Garden of Tane Reserve Committee is very sadden by the news of Nigels passing, he was passionate about Akaroa and the Garden.
We enjoyed the times he spent with us walking through the garden prior to our meetings, he would always reminisce about the old fountain in the grotto area. RIP Nigel.

Akaora lone piper.
The birdsong was interrupted for a while this afternoon by the beautiful sound of a lone piper. Many would of heard the pipes around 4.40pm today as the pipes drifted across Akaora.

Birds of the Garden
The Tui.Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae) is a medium-sized bird native to New Zealand. It is blue, green, and bronze coloured with a distinctive white throat tuft (poi). It is an endemic passerine bird of New Zealand, and the only species in the genus Prosthemadera. It is one of the largest species in the diverse Australasian honeyeater family Meliphagidae, and one of two living species of that family found in New Zealand, the other being the New Zealand bellbird (Anthornis melanura). The tūī has a wide distribution in the archipelago, ranging from the subtropical Kermadec Islands to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands, as well as the main islands

Birds of the Garden of Tane.
The New Zealand fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa) is a small insectivorous bird, the only species of fantail in New Zealand. Its Māori names, pīwakawaka, tīwakawaka or piwaiwaka, and the Chatham Island subspecies by the Moriori name tchitake; the common pied morph is also known as pied fantail (not to be confused with the Malaysian or Philippine pied fantails), and the uncommon dark morph is also known as black fantail (not to be confused with the black fantail of New Guinea). The species has been considered by many to be conspecific (the same) as the grey fantail (Rhipidura albiscapa) of Australia and New Caledonia; however, due to significant differences in its calls, many authorities now treat it as a separate species.

Birds of the Garden of Tane.
The kererū (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae), New Zealand pigeon or wood pigeon, is a species of pigeon native to New Zealand. Johann Friedrich Gmelin described the bird in 1789 as a large, conspicuous pigeon up to 50 cm (20 in) in length and 550–850 g (19–30 oz) in weight, with a white breast and iridescent green–blue plumage. Two subspecies have been recognised; the second—the Norfolk pigeon of Norfolk Island—became extinct in the early 20th century. Kererū pairs are monogamous, breeding over successive seasons and remaining together when not breeding. They construct nests with twigs in trees, with a single egg clutch.

Many of the Garden of Tane walking tracks lead to other destinations. Heading South you will find the Catholic Cemetery. This is a wonderful place to explore Akaroa's past and the many people that play a part of building Akaroa to what it is today.
