Great Long Weekend Mountain Camp !

Follow along with us on our hike up to the Brian Waddington Hut, via the Phelix Creek Trail, in beautiful British Columbia. This moderately challenging hike takes you up to the hut, where you can stay (or tent camp like we did at one of the two subalpine lakes). From there you can hike the Tolkien Range (with the peaks named after famous characters from the trilogies, such as Gandalf and Frodo). The hut itself was constructed in the summer of 1998, and is managed by the UBC Varsity Outdoor Club. It is a spacious hut that sits in a subalpine basin at 1715m (5625 ft) beside Long Lake. It sleeps approximately 25 people, providing all-season shelter for hikers, backcountry skiers, and all other non-motorized users. A $10 per person per night fee applies, should you choose to stay in the hut, that pays for hut maintenance. Monies can be sent online, mailed, or left in the donation box inside. While we didn't get eaten by bears (it is Grizzly country), we did get eaten by mosquitos, black flies, and horseflies; and Danielle even had her pants eaten by a crazy woodchuck. It has been one year since we were stopped, 3kms short of Everest Base Camp. As we start planning a return trip to Himalayas, and decide what other hikes we want to include on this next adventure, we couldn’t help but reminisce on our first trip to Nepal and all the things that made us fall in love with the country and the people. It still hurts to watch the video back, and be reminded of just how close we were to Everest Base Camp, before being told no one could go any further. Whether you watched our daily vlogs on the trek last year, are new to the channel and haven’t seen any yet, or, just want to watch the highlights again put together into one video, check out this video and find out why we failed to make it to Everest Base Camp.

Sábadas Oka hike in Ujarrás, Costa Rica.

This is one of the hikes our friend Olger had been wanting to take us on for a couple years now. Approximately 10kms up (in 35+ degree weather with no trees or shade), it took us around 3.5 hours to get to the top (and a little over 2 to get back down). The hike starts at around 500m (1640 ft.) above sea level and climbs to 1760m (5775 ft.).

At the top there is a small shelter that we cooked and slept in. We had brought our tent, but it was so windy that there was no way we could have slept in it. Even in the shelter, the wind was whipping at the walls and kept us awake most of the night. In the morning we bush-wacked (jungle-wacked?!) for a couple kilometres down a steep jungle path, to see a beautiful hidden waterfall and then returned to the shelter start our hike back out. It was Olger and Gretel’s 22nd wedding anniversary, and since they don’t get many opportunities to get away together (and she’d never done the hike before), she came along too.

Vietnam was amazing. The people were so friendly and hospitable, the food was delicious, the scenery was beautiful. We can’t wait to go back to visit the friends we made, and explore more of this special place in the world. It was so difficult to choose only ten pictures for this post, so be sure to watch our video on YouTube to see more.

Day Eleven | Trek to Everest Base Camp

With Base Camp out of the picture, we headed back to Dingboche, where we spent the next four days venturing up to Chukkung for a night, and running over the ridge to the bakery in Pheriche again for some more treats.

Originally, the plan had been to hike from Gorak Shep, back to Laboche and then over to Chukkung via the Khumbila Pass. From Chukkung, we planned to do Island Peak Base Camp and Chukkung Ri (two more 5000+m peaks we wanted to check off our list), then head down to Dingboche, where we would fly out from. However, the Khumbila Pass was covered in 6ft of snow, so we went straight from Gorak Shep to Dingboche, which contributed to Eoin’s decision to cut Everest Base Camp out. Luckily, we still made it to Chukkung (from Dingboche instead) and got to do the other two peaks as planned.

While the original plan was to do Chukkung Ri after arriving in Chukkung, since it was a shorter distance, the weather wasn’t great; so, since Island Peak Base Camp is not as scenic, we went straight there after arriving in Chukkung and having lunch, on Day 12. This made for a long day as it was 5.2kms from Dingboche to Chukkung and a little over 12.5kms to get to Island Peak Base Camp and back.

On the morning of Day 13, we had perfect weather for the last big hike of our trek. Chukkung Ri sits at approximately 5550m (the second highest peak of our trip). The hike didn’t disappoint, we were alone for practically the whole way up and back, and the views from the top were amazing.

It was truly one of the greatest adventures of our lives.

Day Ten | Trek to Everest Base Camp

Day Ten started in Laboche (5100m) and continued on to Gorak Shep (5165m). From there the plan was to hike to Everest Base Camp, spend the night in Gorak Shep and then wake up really early to hike up to Kaala Patthar (a peak that offers the best view of Everest).

The weather was so perfect, that everyone decided to go up Kaala Patthar, right after lunch in Gorak Shep. Kaala Patthar is a 5650m peak, the highest of our trek, accessible from a 3km long dirt trail from Gorak Shep, with a bit of scrambling at the top. From this peak you can see the sprawling mass of tents that is Base Camp, and the best views of Everest on our trip.

Zach and I had hoped to do Base Camp right after, but daylight was running out, so it was decided to get up early and go to Base Camp with those who wanted to the next morning.

Unfortunately, things don’t always go as planned…
