Nepal Chess Federation Successfully Conducts Special AGM in Hetauda
The dispute within the Nepal Chess Federation has come to the surface. On Jestha 10, 2083 (May 24, 2026), two separate special general assemblies were held by opposing groups. The faction organizing the assembly in Hetauda held a press conference on Wednesday, claiming that their special general assembly was legitimate.
The old federation led by President Herakaji Maharjan remains intact for now. According to the group, the first meeting failed to meet the required 50% quorum, so a second meeting was called on Jestha 11. They claimed the second meeting became valid after achieving the required 33% quorum.
President Maharjan stated:
“Out of a total of 118 representatives, only 46 were present. According to Chapter 3, Article 10, Sub-section 5 (gha) of the statute approved by the National Sports Council, the required 51% quorum was not met, so a second meeting was called for the 12th,” he said. “In the second meeting, 47 representatives were present, which fulfilled the 33% quorum requirement specified in the statute, and the motion of no confidence was unanimously rejected by the quorum members present in the special general assembly.”
There had been disagreements regarding the holding of the general assembly after a no-confidence motion was registered against President Maharjan and General Secretary Dharam Bahadur Lama.
The no-confidence motion included allegations of financial irregularities, mistreatment of players, and an incident two years ago where unnecessary individuals were allegedly included in a travel delegation, which reportedly resulted in Nepali players not obtaining visas for the Chess Olympiad.
Meanwhile, Maharjan has requested that the official logo, letterhead, and seal of the Nepal Chess Federation not be used without authorization. He also warned that legal action would be taken against anyone found using the logo, letterhead, or seal illegally.
