Are we protecting our kids, or are we making them fragile? It is completely natural to want to shield children from discomfort, but there is a hidden cost to fixing every minor problem on their behalf. When we as children run straight to our comfort zone at the first sign of a minor inconvenience, it creates a dangerous pattern. This habit actually programs our subconscious mind to doubt our own abilities. It sends a constant message to our brain that we are not strong enough to handle problematic situations without help.
Confidence is not built on a perfectly smooth path. It is forged when a child faces a small struggle, navigates it, and realizes they are capable of surviving it. The reality is that parental protection has an expiration date. Parents cannot control every environment, and eventually, children will face complex challenges completely outside of their domain. If they have never practiced problem-solving on the small things, they simply won't have the tools to handle the big things.
Instead of stepping in as the ultimate fixer, the role of a parent is to step back and act as an external guide. We need to encourage, support, and coach through struggles rather than taking over the steering wheel. Let’s stop preparing the path for the child, and start preparing the child for the path.
