Training in your 40s doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need to be done properly.

Strength becomes more important as we get older, not less. Good warm-ups, controlled movement, enough rest between sets and a consistent routine… it all matters more now than ever.

This is the approach I use with clients in their 40s, 50s and beyond - structured sessions that feel good on the joints, build confidence and genuinely move you forward.

Most people start their fitness journey thinking in “body parts”…
arms day, chest day, leg day… (men - you know who you are!!)

But the more I’ve coached over the years, the more I’ve seen that real progress comes from training movement patterns instead - pushing, pulling, hinging, squatting and bracing.

It keeps the body balanced, stops you hammering the same joints over and over, and it actually carries over into day-to-day life. That’s why I use this approach with pretty much everyone I train.

A lot of people still think a workout only counts if they wake in pain the next day. But soreness isn’t a marker of progress - it’s usually just your body reacting to something new or unexpected.

Good training is about consistency, steady strength gains and feeling more in control of your movements... not limping around the following morning.

If you ever needed a reminder that short, sharp work can go a long way, here it is…

I’ve been playing around with sprint work recently, and it turns out there’s some pretty incredible science behind it. Just six 30-second sprints (with a appropriate rest between each one) can lead to a huge boost in human growth hormone - the stuff that helps with strength, fat-loss, recovery, and just generally feeling younger and sharper.

It’s basically your body getting the message: “Right, time to repair, rebuild and get stronger.”

The best bit?
You don’t need a gym, fancy equipment or an hour spare - just a bit of space and the willingness to push hard for half a minute at a time.

Is it tough?
Yep.
Is it worth it?
Absolutely.

If you’re someone who struggles with long cardio sessions or doesn’t have loads of time, this is a brilliant option to mix into your week. I’ve been doing a version of it myself and honestly, it feels great.

What defines a sprint can differ hugely from person to person but this is something that we can discuss together. Sprinting really does require an all-out effort!

This comes no surprise whatsoever but a recent study confirms that getting moving can do more for our mood than a pill bottle. A huge study of over 120,000 people found that regular exercise - whether it’s walking, strength training or anything that gets you moving - can be more effective than medication for improving symptoms of depression.

It comes down to those feel-good chemicals our body makes when we train. Better sleep, more energy, and a sense of routine all play their part too.

Of course, medication has its place and helps many people - but it’s nice to know that something as simple as moving your body a few times a week can make such a big positive difference to mental health.

Move for your body, move for your mind!
