Colluding: A Call for Integrity and Transparency
The 2025/26 season risks being remembered not for rugby, but for growing concerns around fairness and integrity within the competition.
In recent weeks, there have been increasing discussions and actions behind the scenes that raise serious questions about how decisions are being influenced particularly regarding playoff positions in the Ereklasse.
Let’s be clear: investing in coaching, players, and performance is part of the game. That’s what drives competition forward. But when the focus shifts away from performance on the pitch to conversations off it, we need to take a step back and ask whether we are still upholding the values of rugby.
Rugby has always stood for respect, integrity, and accountability. If clubs, coaches, or stakeholders are engaging in efforts that undermine those principles whether through pressure, influence, or lack of transparency then the game as a whole suffers.
This is bigger than one club or one decision. It’s about protecting the credibility of Dutch rugby and ensuring that outcomes are decided where they should be: on the field.
There is a responsibility on all stakeholders including the union to ensure that decisions are made fairly, consistently, and transparently. That means proper due diligence, clear communication, and equal treatment for all clubs.
Clubs, players, and supporters deserve confidence in the system. Without that, the competition loses its meaning.
It’s time for openness, accountability, and a recommitment to the core values that make rugby what it is.
