💊 An Arthritis Drug Helped People With Severe Alopecia Regrow Significant Amounts of Hair

A medication commonly used to treat inflammatory diseases has shown promising results for people with severe alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks hair follicles.

Two Phase 3 clinical trials involving 1,399 participants found that upadacitinib (Rinvoq) produced substantial scalp-hair regrowth within 24 weeks. All participants began the studies with at least half of their scalp hair missing.

Among those receiving the higher dose:

🔹 54–55% achieved at least 80% scalp-hair coverage, compared with about 2–3% receiving placebo.
🔹 Approximately 20–23% achieved complete scalp-hair coverage.
🔹 Differences in hair coverage were already evident by week 8.
🔹 Participants also reported improvements in quality of life.

Upadacitinib works by blocking JAK1, an enzyme involved in immune signaling. By reducing certain immune signals, the drug may help interrupt the attack on hair follicles and allow hair growth to resume.

The trials included 118 adolescents, with participants taking either 15 mg or 30 mg of upadacitinib daily or a placebo.

⚠️ But there is an important distinction: These findings apply to alopecia areata, not ordinary male- or female-pattern hair loss. The results also do not mean the drug is a permanent cure.

Safety remains an important consideration. Serious adverse events occurred in 1.6–2.3% of treated participants compared with 0.4% in the placebo group, although these events were not necessarily caused by the treatment. Upadacitinib also carries established warnings, including risks of serious infections and blood clots.

The drug’s manufacturer, AbbVie, funded and helped design the trials. The published analysis covers the first 24 weeks, with longer-term follow-up continuing.

📌 Bottom line: The findings are encouraging for people living with severe alopecia areata, but they show hair regrowth during treatment, not proof of a permanent cure or that upadacitinib is superior to every existing alopecia treatment.

🚨 Unopened Tattoo Ink May Contain Harmful Bacteria

A sealed bottle of tattoo ink may look completely safe—but new research suggests that some commercial tattoo and permanent makeup inks can contain live bacteria even before they are opened.

Researchers examined commercial tattoo and permanent makeup inks and found that about 35% of the samples tested were contaminated with bacteria, including both aerobic and anaerobic species.

This is particularly concerning because anaerobic bacteria can survive and multiply in environments with little oxygen, such as deeper layers of the skin where tattoo ink is deposited.

🦠 One of the bacteria detected was Cutibacterium acnes, a microorganism commonly associated with the skin that can potentially cause infections under certain conditions.

The findings challenge the assumption that an unopened or sealed bottle automatically means the ink is sterile.

Following concerns about microbial contamination, the FDA has issued guidance encouraging manufacturers to strengthen measures such as sterilization processes, ingredient/component testing, and contamination control.

🍎 CAN POMEGRANATE PEEL HELP FIGHT SKIN CANCER?

A study published in the Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research investigated the potential effects of standardized pomegranate peel extract on melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer.

Researchers used mice with melanoma tumors and gave them different doses of pomegranate peel extract daily.

📊 The results were interesting:

As the dose increased, the tumors became smaller.

* Control group: 1.46 g tumor weight
* 50 mg/kg: 1.28 g
* 100 mg/kg: 1.03 g
* 200 mg/kg: 0.82 g
* 400 mg/kg: 0.58 g

Tumor volume also decreased from 2.4 cm³ in the control group to 0.95 cm³ at the highest dose.

🔬 Researchers also found that the extract reduced VEGF and CD31, markers associated with the formation of new blood vessels that help tumors grow. It also reduced Ki-67, a marker of cell proliferation.

The researchers suggested that these effects may involve activation of the PPARα and PPARγ pathways, since blocking these receptors weakened the extract’s effects.

⚠️ Important: This was an animal study, not a human clinical trial. The findings do not mean that eating pomegranate peel or taking pomegranate supplements can treat or cure melanoma in people.

More research, especially well-designed human studies, is needed to determine whether these effects translate to humans.

⚠️ ERIN BROCKOVICH RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT AI DATA CENTERS AND WILDLIFE

Environmental advocate Erin Brockovich has raised concerns about the possible impact of rapidly expanding AI data centers on local ecosystems.

In a recent appearance on The Shawn Ryan Show, Brockovich discussed reports from communities living near large data centers. Some residents say they have noticed:

🚨 A CANNABIS-BASED DRUG MAY HELP ELIMINATE PTSD NIGHTMARES

For millions of people living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep can mean reliving terrifying experiences through recurring nightmares.

Now, a new clinical trial has found promising results from dronabinol, a prescription medication containing THC—the active compound in cannabis.

Researchers at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin studied 170 people with PTSD in a 10-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

New research suggests fructose may help ovarian cancer spread.

Scientists at The Wistar Institute have discovered that fructose, a common sugar in many diets, may do more than fuel the body—it could also help aggressive ovarian cancer spread.

According to a study published in Nature Aging, ovarian cancer cells that survive chemotherapy release fructose as a chemical signal to nearby tumor cells. This signal reduces cholesterol production in those cells. Since cholesterol helps keep tumor cells bound together, lower cholesterol may weaken those connections, making it easier for cancer cells to break away and spread throughout the abdominal cavity.

Researchers also found that high levels of dietary fructose promoted cancer spread in preclinical models, even without chemotherapy. The study further suggests that cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins may have similar effects on tumor cell adhesion, though scientists stress that patients should not stop taking prescribed medications based on these findings alone.

The research raises important questions about the role of nutrition and cholesterol-lowering medications in cancer progression, especially in countries where high-fructose corn syrup is widely consumed. 🦔 Leprosy Cases Are Rising in Florida, and Scientists Believe the Disease May Now Be Endemic in Parts of the State

Health experts are raising concerns as cases of Hansen’s disease (leprosy) continue to increase in Florida. By mid-July 2026, the state had reported 17 cases, following 36 cases in 2025.

According to researchers, Central Florida has become the main hotspot, accounting for 81% of the state’s cases and nearly 20% of all reported cases in the United States. Because many patients had no history of international travel, scientists believe the bacteria responsible for the disease may now be established in parts of Florida.

Researchers point to the nine-banded armadillo as the most likely source. These animals can naturally carry the bacteria (Mycobacterium leprae), and genetic studies have linked strains found in armadillos to human infections in the southern U.S. Scientists are also investigating whether contaminated soil in areas where infected armadillos live could play a role in transmission.

The good news is that the risk to the general public remains very low. About 95% of people are naturally immune to leprosy. The disease usually requires prolonged, close contact to spread between people, is curable with antibiotics, and patients quickly stop being contagious after starting treatment.

To reduce your risk, health officials recommend:
✅ Avoid touching or handling wild armadillos.
✅ Wear gloves when gardening or working in areas where armadillos may be present.

While the increase in cases is being closely monitored, experts emphasize that there is no need for panic, as leprosy is a treatable disease and the overall risk to the public remains low.
