SPORTS: Liverpool Part Ways with Arne Slot After Disappointing Season

By Sports Recorder newspaper

Liverpool Football Club have officially dismissed manager Arne Slot, bringing an abrupt end to the Dutch coach's tenure at Anfield following a disappointing Premier League campaign.

The decision was announced just days after the conclusion of the 2025/2026 English Premier League season, in which the Reds failed to retain their league crown and finished fifth on the table, although they secured qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League.
Breaking his silence after the club's decision, Slot expressed appreciation to Liverpool and its supporters, choosing a tone of gratitude rather than resentment.
"It’s been an amazing ride together with Liverpool. I am so grateful that we were able to win the league last season," he said.

Slot's statement has generated mixed reactions among Liverpool fans, many of whom acknowledged both the successes and challenges that characterized his time at the club.

His departure follows a difficult season marked by inconsistent performances and mounting pressure on the team. Despite guiding Liverpool to Champions League qualification, the club's hierarchy opted for a managerial change as part of efforts to restore the club's competitiveness at the highest level.

Attention has now shifted to the search for Slot's successor, with Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola reportedly emerging as one of the leading candidates. Iraola has earned widespread praise after steering Bournemouth to a historic European qualification spot this season.

Liverpool's decision signals the beginning of another transitional phase for one of England's most successful clubs. As supporters bid farewell to Slot, focus is already turning to the future and the task of rebuilding a team capable of challenging for major honours once again.

The coming weeks are expected to be crucial as the Merseyside club moves to appoint a new manager ahead of preparations for the 2026/2027 campaign.

Sports Veterans Mourn Onigbinde, Nwosu, Hail Their Lasting Football Legacy

BY SOLOMON OKPO

The Association of Sports Veterans of Nigeria (SVN) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of two distinguished figures in Nigerian football, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde and Henry Nwosu, describing their passing as a monumental loss to the nation’s sporting community.
In a statement jointly signed by the President of the Association, Chief Jonathan Ogufere, and the Secretary, Elder Paul Bassey, the body paid glowing tribute to the late football icons for their immense contributions to the growth and international recognition of Nigerian football.

The Association recalled with nostalgia the remarkable achievements of the late Onigbinde, whose coaching career left an indelible mark on the nation’s football history. The Modakeke-born tactician rose to national prominence after succeeding Otto Gloria as head coach of the national team at a time many Nigerians clamoured for an indigenous manager to lead the squad.

According to the statement, Onigbinde etched his name into history as the first indigenous coach to guide Nigeria to a silver medal finish at the 1984 African Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. Widely admired for his calm touchline demeanour and tactical discipline, the respected football administrator also became the first coach local or foreign to defeat Ghana in Accra during a World Cup qualifying campaign, a victory that paved the way for Nigeria’s qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan.

The Sports Veterans further noted that Chief Onigbinde’s legacy transcended results on the pitch. Under his leadership, promising talents such as Femi Opabunmi emerged on the global stage as a teenager at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, while legendary goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama was discovered and elevated through his recommendation, eventually earning over 100 caps for Nigeria.

The statement highlighted that Onigbinde managed the Super Eagles in 37 international matches across two spells between 1983–1984 and 2002, recording 13 victories, 17 draws, and seven defeats.
The Association also paid tribute to Henry Nwosu, describing him as one of the finest midfielders of his generation and a patriotic servant of Nigerian football. Nwosu was celebrated as a key member of Nigeria’s victorious 1980 Africa Cup of Nations squad and for representing the country for more than a decade with distinction.

The late football star later transitioned into coaching and administration, bringing his wealth of experience to several clubs and national assignments. He served as assistant coach to Onigbinde during the 2002 FIFA World Cup and also handled teams such as Ibom Stars, Union Bank FC, Gateway FC, and the national U-17 side.

The Association stated that both men dedicated their lives to the advancement of football in Nigeria and would be remembered for their professionalism, patriotism, and enduring impact on generations of players and coaches.

“Their contributions to Nigerian football development remain invaluable, and their memories will continue to inspire future generations,” the statement added.

SPORTS: Governor Eno Commends Ibom Air’s Investment in Sports at 7th Anniversary Celebration

BY SOLOMON OKPO

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has applauded the growing contribution of Ibom Air to sports development in the state, describing the airline as a model of corporate responsibility and excellence.
The Governor gave the commendation on Saturday during the grand finale of a football tournament organised to mark the airline’s 7th anniversary celebration at the Uyo Township Stadium.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, Governor Eno said the airline had distinguished itself not only in aviation but also through meaningful investments in sports, particularly football, tennis and golf.
According to him, Ibom Air’s sustained support has continued to strengthen sports development and talent discovery across the state.

“It pleases me to know that you are not only riding the skies in aviation, but also distinguishing yourself as an exemplary corporate citizen. Your intervention in golf, tennis and most recently football is worth commending,” the Governor stated.
He noted that the airline’s sponsorship significantly supported Akwa United’s campaign to regain its footing in Nigerian football, while also contributing to the impressive performance of Akwa Ibom athletes at the recently concluded Niger Delta Games in Benin, Edo State.

Governor Eno specifically highlighted the achievements of the state’s tennis team, which secured three of the five gold medals contested at the regional competition through the backing received from the airline.
The Governor further praised Ibom Air for maintaining high operational standards over the past seven years, describing the airline as a reflection of the Akwa Ibom spirit of excellence, innovation, professionalism and quality service delivery.

He also commended the airline’s expanding international operations within the West African sub-region, noting that the development has enhanced connectivity, promoted tourism and strengthened economic activities between Akwa Ibom and other parts of the world.
“The achievements recorded within this relatively short period stand as an eloquent testament to the hard work and foresight of your airline’s dedicated leadership and focused workforce,” he said.

Governor Eno expressed optimism that the airline would continue to raise its standards and sustain customer satisfaction in the years ahead.

The football tournament, which lasted over two weeks, climaxed with the Lagos team of Ibom Air defeating its Uyo counterpart 3-2 on penalties after regulation time ended goalless to emerge champions of the anniversary competition.

Akwa Ibom athletes who represented Nigeria at the African Weightlifting Championships in Egypt have returned home with medals and praises for the sports development initiatives of Governor Pastor Umo Eno under the ARISE Agenda, after recording impressive performances that also secured qualification for the Commonwealth Games.

The athletes, Ruth Nyong and Edidiong Umuofia, were celebrated for their outstanding achievements at the continental competition. Ruth Nyong clinched three gold medals in the 45kg category, while Edidiong Umuofia won one gold and two silver medals in the 71kg category.

Elder Bassey described their success as another testament to the growing sports renaissance in Akwa Ibom State and reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Umo Eno to sports development, youth empowerment, and talent discovery.

According to the Commissioner, the establishment of a standalone Ministry of Sports has significantly transformed the sporting sector in the state, leading to remarkable achievements across different competitions.

“The creation of a standalone sports ministry is one of the best things to happen to sports in Akwa Ibom State, and the harvest has been enormous,” he stated.
He praised the athletes for their discipline, dedication, and professionalism, urging them to remain focused as they prepare for future international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games.

Also speaking, the Vice President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Lawrence Iquaibom, expressed gratitude to Governor Umo Eno, the Commissioner for Sports, and the Ministry of Sports for their consistent support toward the development of weightlifting in the state.

Mr. Iquaibom noted that the athletes’ achievements reflected the state government’s sustained investment in sports infrastructure, athlete welfare, and capacity building.
A visibly excited Elder Bassey reiterated that the state government values athletes who continue to place Akwa Ibom on the global sports map through excellence and dedication.

He explained that this informed the introduction of reward systems aimed at motivating outstanding athletes, citing the recent maiden State Sports Festival where medal-winning athletes received financial rewards for their performances.

The Sports Commissioner further applauded Governor Umo Eno for his sustained commitment to sports development and youth empowerment and encouraged young people across the state to remain committed to developing their talents through sports.

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of medals won at the African Championships to the Sports Commissioner by the athletes.
Present during the visit were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia; Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Weightlifting Association, Mr. Isaac Ikono; coaches, and other officials of the association.

SPORTS: Arsenal End 22-Year Wait, Clinch Premier League Title as Man City Stumble

BY THE EDITOR

After 22 years of heartbreak, near misses and rebuilding, Arsenal have finally been crowned Premier League champions following Manchester City’s dramatic 1-1 draw against AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

City needed victory at the Vitality Stadium to keep the title race alive until the final day of the season, but Bournemouth’s resilience ended the defending champions’ hopes and handed the trophy to Mikel Arteta’s side.
The triumph marks Arsenal’s first Premier League title in 22 years and ends a six-year wait for major silverware. After finishing runners-up in the last three seasons, Arteta’s men finally broke through with consistency, defensive discipline and renewed belief.
The Gunners had moved within touching distance of the title on Monday after edging relegated Burnley F.C. 1-0 to establish a five-point lead over City. Arsenal responded impressively to last month’s defeat against City by winning four consecutive league matches without conceding a goal.

Meanwhile, City’s title defence collapsed amid growing uncertainty surrounding the future of manager Pep Guardiola. Reports suggesting Guardiola could leave at the end of the season appeared to cast a shadow over the club despite their recent FA Cup triumph over Chelsea F.C., which completed a domestic cup double.
Guardiola, who has won six Premier League titles during a glittering decade at City, watched helplessly as Bournemouth frustrated his side throughout the encounter.

Bournemouth nearly fell behind early when Antoine Semenyo had the ball in the net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. However, the home side eventually found the breakthrough in the 39th minute when teenager Eli Junior Kroupi curled a superb effort into the top corner to score his 13th Premier League goal of the season a new record for a teenager in a debut campaign.

City struggled to respond despite several opportunities. Nico O’Reilly was denied by goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic moments after the restart, while Bournemouth continued to threaten through Rayan and David Brooks, both of whom struck the woodwork.
Although Erling Haaland rescued a late equaliser deep into stoppage time, the goal came too late to revive City’s fading title hopes.

The draw also boosted Liverpool F.C.’s hopes of securing Champions League qualification, as the Reds now hold a three-point advantage over Bournemouth heading into the final day of the season.

For Arsenal supporters across the world, however, the night belonged entirely to Arteta and his history-making squad, who have finally restored the club to the summit of English football.
