Chelsea boss Tuchel demands 'focus' from his squad in Champions League push

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel says he 'cannot care less' about Chelsea's current position in the race for the Premier League top four.

The Blues have brought themselves back into the mix for Champions League qualification after taking seven points from Tuchel's first three games in charge.

A 1-0 win at Tottenham on Thursday saw them move four points off fourth-placed Leicester ahead of Sunday's trip to Sheffield United.

But Tuchel is not concerned about his side's current position in the table.

'I cannot care less because I cannot influence other results and I cannot influence what the other teams do,' he said. 'I know there are too many teams between us and the Champions League places.

'It is maybe boring, and I can understand, but I simply know no other approach than to take it step by step. The most important thing is that we don't lose the focus and we care about the guys who were not on the pitch against Tottenham and get a lot of attention, so we have to take care of them and to take care of our quality and atmosphere in the dressing room that we are able to compete again on Sunday.

'We have only two days. Maybe we need some changes to be sharp again and to be physical again and that we are able to compete on the highest level in the next game and able to compete against a strong Sheffield and a very physical Sheffield side which won the last games.

'This is all we focus on and the rest we have no influence on. We have enough to do to take care of ourselves.'

Despite their impressive form since his arrival 10 days ago, Tuchel is not taking anything for granted ahead of the trip to Bramall Lane.

'I look match to match or we lose the focus. Once you bring your head up and look more than one game, you lose your focus,' he said.

'I don't know any other approach, maybe other coaches do - for me it's not possible and of course not possible if we step up in the middle of the season. We take this step by step.

'Tomorrow is the most important day to analyse the match, to have the group together, to take care about our atmosphere and our spirit and to do a good training with the guys who did not get so much attention today and to take care of them.

'And then we will prepare the next day and fly to Sheffield and wait for the next big match to arrive.

'It starts 0-0 and we have to earn our points. If we want to get points we have to earn them and this is the only way I know how to do it. Everybody is happy about that and the results and the points take care of themselves and we have to be focused and to improve and take care of the things that are good.'

Tuchel says defenders' goals should send a 'signal' to 'sensitive' Werner
Thomas Tuchel has said Timo Werner is 'very sensitive' to the fact he is struggling to score goals.

Werner failed to find the net again in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Burnley - forcing defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcus Alonso to step in.

Tuchel has, however, said it is unrealistic to believe Werner will change overnight, but admits the fact Chelsea's defensive players are scoring should be a wake-up call to the forwards.

Speaking about Werner's inability to get on the scoresheet, Tuchel said: 'We are working on it with him. We cannot expect that he changes from one minute to the other, from one day to the other.

'He’s not the only striker in the world who is very sensitive when he does not score.

'When he misses the feeling of scoring...no talks, no hugs, no warm words can make up for this feeling.

'Maybe we need a stupid goal, a deflection or whatever. For him, a silly goal that opens it up again, it’s the last percentage.

'As long as the guys work, as long as they are reliable in their positions and in their work rate for the team. We will push them.'

Tuchel did, however, says the fact two defenders scored against Burnley should provide the forwards with a wake-up call.

He believes they are lacking precision and claims they must make the most of their touches in the box.

He said: 'It should be a signal to our guys up front that we needed two defensive players to score! We lack in the moment the precision in the last past.

'We lack precision in the last touch, the finishing. We will work on this absolutely because we had a lot of touches in the box.

'A lot of half chances, a lot of deliveries. In the end I couldn’t care less because we scored with Azpi and we scored with Marcus and we are happy to have a deserved win. '

Mendy vs Kepa: Chelsea keepers compared and contraste
Edouard Mendy is expected to displace Kepa Arrizabalaga as Chelsea's number one. We used Opta data to compare the two goalkeepers.

Chelsea made Kepa Arrizabalaga the world's most expensive goalkeeper when they shelled out £71.6million to sign him in August 2018.

Mendy in to challenge Kepa

Club director Marina Granovskaia said upon the announcement of his arrival: "Kepa is a talent we have admired for a long time and we are extremely excited about his arrival.

"He has already demonstrated fantastic quality and consistency and will be a big part of any success Chelsea have in the coming years. His long-term contract reflects the belief we have in him and we look ahead to the coming seasons with an enormous sense of optimism."

Just over two years later, though, and Kepa's long-term future at the club is far from certain, with the Blues having paid £22m to bring in Edouard Mendy from Rennes.

Chelsea said Mendy had joined to "complement our existing group" of keepers, but he will be expected to swiftly make the starting spot his own after Kepa committed two errors leading to goals across the opening two games of the Premier League season.

With the help of Opta, we look at what Chelsea can expect from Mendy and how he compares to Kepa.

Mendy (24) made nine fewer league appearances than Kepa (33) in 2019-20, with the coronavirus pandemic having curtailed the Ligue 1 season when most teams still had 10 more fixtures to fulfil.

He conceded 19 goals and kept nine clean sheets as Rennes qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history, while Kepa let in 28 more and shut out the opposition one time less.

Mendy registered a far higher save percentage than the Blues keeper (76.3 per cent to 53.5 per cent) and blew him out of the water in terms of goals prevented.

According to expected goals on target data (xGoT), the shots on target faced by Mendy were enough to concede 21 goals. However, he only let in 18 (excluding own goals) and was therefore responsible for preventing three goals.

For Kepa, the numbers tell a far different story. An xGoT value of 34 compared to the 45 goals he let in (excluding own goals) means he conceded 11 more than expected.

On that basis alone, it is easy to see why Chelsea were keen to seek out an alternative.

The move to Chelsea means Mendy may have to adapt to a different style of goalkeeping, though.

In the Premier League last season, 51 per cent of Kepa's 198 goal-kicks ended inside his own box.

However, Mendy sent far more of his long, with only 21 per cent of his 163 goal-kicks finding a recipient in his area.

Furthermore, over half of Mendy's passes (56.7 per cent) were classified as long balls, with Kepa's ratio down at 33.7 per cent. Despite that, though, his average of 20.1 successful passes per 90 minutes was just 2.6 fewer than the Spaniard.

Unless Chelsea specifically want greater emphasis on long-range distribution, Mendy could require some time to adjust to playing a shorter passing game.

But if he is able to adapt, Kepa may find his game time at Stamford Bridge severely limited.
