Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has made a surprising revelation about the unusual challenges he says he used to set himself while officiating matches.
Speaking on Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party podcast, Dean said referees used to joke about seeing how long they could go after kick-off without blowing the whistle.

Dean claimed that he personally managed to go 20–25 minutes without blowing his whistle on several occasions during Premier League matches, before the introduction of VAR.

But that wasn't the only challenge.
Dean also revealed that he would sometimes try to remain inside the centre circle for as long as possible. He said he once managed to stay there for around 15 minutes during a match.
According to Dean, these were simply things he did “as a laugh” rather than an official refereeing practice.

However, his revelation has generated plenty of debate. Some former players and fans have questioned whether such behaviour was appropriate for a Premier League referee, while figures within refereeing have reportedly expressed scepticism about Dean's claims.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor was particularly critical of Dean's comments, arguing that refereeing Premier League matches is too serious for officials to treat it like a joke.

Dean spent 22 years as a Premier League referee, taking charge of 553 matches before ending his on-field refereeing career in 2022. He later worked as a VAR before leaving PGMOL in 2023.

Liverpool travel to Portman Road on Friday, September 4, looking for their first Premier League victory of the 2026/27 season, while newly promoted Ipswich Town will be determined to cause another upset in front of their home supporters.

𝗜𝗣𝗦𝗪𝗜𝗖𝗛 𝗧𝗢𝗪𝗡

Gary O'Neil's side have made an entertaining start to their return to the Premier League. They opened the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland but were beaten 5-2 by Manchester United in their next league match.

The major concern for Ipswich will be their defensive vulnerability. They have shown that they can create chances and score goals, but Liverpool's attacking quality will provide a much bigger test.

𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗢𝗢𝗟

Andoni Iraola's Liverpool are still searching for their first win after consecutive 2-2 draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

The Reds have shown good character by coming from behind in both matches, but they need to become more defensively solid and control games better if they want to challenge at the top of the table.

Liverpool's attacking options remain dangerous, with players such as Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai capable of deciding the game.

New signing Bradley Barcola could also make his Liverpool debut, although reports suggest he may initially start on the bench.
