THROWBACK TO 2015/2016, Part 1.

My first business had just crashed due to selling on credit and the hike in dollars. Things were not too rosy. My husband and I had registered an Engineering firm years back, but prospective clients were just telling us "we will get back to you".

Bills were piling, we had a family to care for. We both started job hunting eagerly.

Living in Lagos, plus having a little son with no nanny or assistant was the major reason I decided to look for a job around. I was not ready to deal with waking up by 4am, looking for a good daycare center and spending a greater part of my life in Lagos traffic. Our son was still young and I didn't have a maid or nanny. So I selected some "Standard Schools" in my area and dropped my application. By the way, I read Elect/Elect. Engineering, graduated and completed my NYSC.

The first school called me. And there I received the first shock😲 of my life. 'Uncle Principal' read my application letter and after checking my credentials asked me if I wrote the application myself. When I said yes, he said he was shocked because Engineers don't know how to speak or write correct English. I felt insulted though, but I let it slide (na me know wetin carry me come).

I started negotiations with them. I was told I would be paid N35000, but I was going to teach Mathematics JS1-3, SS1-3, Further Mathematics SS1-3, Basic Science JS1-3, Physics SS1-3.

What😲! Only me one 😳?

I told Uncle Principal that I won't be giving the students my best because I was extremely overloaded. I was willing to do Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics, but they weren't in agreement. I was still in negotiations with them

The second school called me. Well they told me point blank that they could only afford to pay me N15000 because I was inexperienced (chai, I don suffer sha😭) but I would be teaching Technical Drawing, Physics and Further Mathematics. I told the Principal I couldn't accept his offer, besides I wasn't good in Technical Drawing. Oga Principal almost challenged my Engineering certification - like how could I ever claim to read Engineering and not know Technical Drawing?

I cancelled school two.

Meanwhile I was still negotiating with school one. Infact, I started teaching for free in their summer coaching program.

Then school three called.
I was given an aptitude test, given a practical class to teach. I was told that they would get back to me.

Two days later, I was called on phone by school three. I was offered an appointment to teach Basic Science for JS1-3, and Physics for SS1-3 for N20000. By this time, I was tired of the whole process. After much dragging and dragging, we settled for N22000.

School resumed and your favorite housewife became a Secondary school teacher 😄.
Did it end well? It ended in premium tears😭. But I got my revenge sha 🤣.

If I know what I know now, nothing would have ever made me go job-hunting in a private school.

A lot of Moms like me become school teachers not because that is what they actually want but because they see it as the only job AVAILABLE for them to do. A lot of greedy school owners exploit them because they know they don't have any options.

THE DAY I MADE A DECISION TO START EARNING INCOME AS A HOUSEWIFE.

My 'Oga-at-the-top' had just spent close to N100,000 paying for my medical bills. This was not just a one-off payment, he made this payment for my treatment every 3 weeks for 6 months. And he was solely responsible for all my medical bills.

For a young couple like us, with an average source of income, this meant that we basically had the scrape every single one Kobo we had.

I was back from the hospital on one of this occasion when we heard someone banging on our gate. The only people who had guts to bang our gate anyhow were the PHCN workers, and we were right.

"Bring your NEPA bill", they shouted.

Unfortunately, we had an unpaid bill of N7000 on it.

The PHCN marketer handling our region had a personal beef with us, because we had written a letter to the PHCN management that he refused to read our Analog meter and instead was giving us crazy bills.

When he saw that debt of N7000, he quickly ordered the disconnection team to disconnect our building, and they happily did.

Chai, it was so painful 😣! But we couldn't pay ordinary N7000 because my husband had scraped off the last Kobo we had paying for my medical bills.

That day, I told myself "Eno, you have to look for something you can do to support this man".

If I had my own source of income, at least, I would have been able to pay off or even part of our electricity bill. If we had paid at least N3000, there was no way our light would have been disconnected.

That singular encounter was the PUSH I needed to start earning an income.

I remember when I used to be ashamed to let people know that I am a housewife.

When they ask me what I was doing for a living, I would say I was job-hunting🙈.

Please don't judge me - how did you expect me, a whole graduate of Electrical/Electronic Engineering to say that I was just a HOUSEWIFE 🤷🏾‍♀️?

People will use me for prayer points😄 - that God will forbid anything that will turn their daughters who are graduates to housewives.

But let's face facts and reality - more and more married women whether graduates or not are now housewives for various reasons.

Some are housewives because they lost their jobs when they became pregnant, or when they could no longer combine motherhood with the pressure at work.

Others are housewives because they are yet to get a suitable job that fits their current motherhood status.

While others are housewives because their husbands feel that they should stay home and care for the family, or because these set of husbands think they are more than capable to carry the financial responsibilities of the family.

And there is this group of housewives who voluntarily become housewives because that is what they want to be - nobody forced or cajoled us to become a housewife.

Like I will always say, being a full-time HOUSEWIFE is not a glamorous job-title because it is usually associated with lack of money, total financial dependence on a person's spouse and lack of self-esteem.

However, this should not be true in your own case. You can be a housewife who is financially independent and self-confident.

It all starts from you.

Stop using your phone and data to troll celebrities lagos on Social Media, and 'stanning' your favs on BBNaija. Use your smartphone to earn an income. There are so many things you can do with or without a CAPITAL. Maybe you need to learn a skill and before you know, you will start earning reasonable income .

You can choose to listen to what I am saying, or you can choose to 'throway face' just like I did in this picture - the choice is yours. I know I have kuku done the Lord's work this morning.

I am a HOUSEWIFE.

Yes, and I say this with pride.

Being a housewife is not an excuse for not doing any business.

I am a housewife who is a CAC registration expert. I register businesses with the CAC. I also provide professional guidance when it comes to starting a business.

I have an online jewelry business where I sell beautiful and affordable jewelry pieces for kids and adults.

I manage the administrative affairs of an engineers company.

But I am still a housewife.

So why do you choose to associate being a housewife with poverty, idleness and laziness?

Why should you condemn your little girl who says she wants to be a housewife?

You can be everything you want to be even as a housewife - the ball is in your court.

Stop being timid and shy because you are a housewife. You can be more.

MAKE UNA COME OUT O📢, WE GET FAMILY MEETING.

The other day I made a post asking for people's opinions if their daughter told them that they want to be a HOUSEWIFE when they grow up.
O boy, everyone was breathing fire and brimstone 😂😂😂.

I used to think that our generation is more 'woke' compared to our parent's generation. I thought we all agreed to support our kids in their chosen career unlike our parents who never gave us the opportunity to choose our career paths. E clear sey we are just another 'pro max' extension of our parents 😃.

However I see the sense in your objections. Every parent want what is best for their children. We don't want our kids to experience the challenges we are facing.

Since being a HOUSEWIFE is associated with lack of money, total financial dependence on once spouse, unhappiness, lack of fulfillment etc, we never want our daughters to ever experience that.

The truth though is - whether we like it or not, whether we pray against it or not, some of our daughters will still end up as HOUSEWIVES. That's a fact. Some will end up as housewives probably because of health challenges, loss of job, unfriendly work-enviroment policies that are targeted at women of child-bearing age etc.

HOUSEWIVES can still live a fulfilled life. Housewives can become financially independent. Housewives can still be happy. Housewives can still become whatever they want to become from the comfort of their homes.

Are we ready for this discussion? Or should I mind my business? Let's discuss.

How is Daddy wa🤷🏾‍♀️? I hope the children of God in your homes are not tearing your mouth and overworking your vocal cords this holiday.

I have a personal beef with those of you who have bundled your kids to Grandma's house 😡. And the reason I am beefing you is because I don't have a Grandma's house to bundle my battalion to.

By the way, like I was 'choked' by the comments in one of my previous post. Nobody, I mean nobody wants to support their daughters into trying 'housewifeship' as a career😂. Una harsh o - see how Mummies dey vex 🤣🤣🤣.

E clear sey 99% of Mummies who are housewives became housewives because of condition, not out of choice.

Let me be frank with all of you - the reason why all of you are against your daughters becoming housewives is the 'brokeness' that is associated with being a housewife. True or false?

So take away the brokeness, the financial dependence on someone - would you encourage support your daughter to be a housewife? You go gree?

I saw this on page and trust me, I had a lot of things to say about it. Hence I decided to share it on my page so that we can learn too😊.
1️⃣ Take into consideration the number and age of your kids before starting any business. E get why.
2️⃣ Having your spouse's support will make it easier for you. If he refuses to support you, just know that you will have to work extra hard.
3️⃣ Make sure you have an EXCELLENT customer service.
4️⃣ Study the business before you invest in it. Don't assume that because it is working for A, it will work for you. Know the nitty-gritty of the business. If you have to pay someone to teach you, please do.
5️⃣ It is a business not a hobby - treat it as such.
6️⃣ Don't sell on credit - it will ruin your business.
7️⃣ Your business money is not biscuit money for the kids mbok. Neither is it money for asoebi etc, be guided.
8️⃣ When your spouse borrows money from you, he MIGHT not pay back especially if you keep singing into his ears how much you have made sales. Bad debts like that may cripple your business.
9️⃣ Have opening and closing hours. If not you might end up ignoring your family.
These are the few I can remember now.

I have been having conversations with a lot of SAHMs recently and what I hear each time breaks my heart💔. Due to the negativity around them, they have been conditioned to believe that their HOUSEWIFE status makes them irrelevant. Some are battling low self-esteem issues. Some have been conditioned to think that they can never run thriving businesses as housewives probably because they failed previously.
If this is happening to you, or someone around you, I want you to take this to heart: YOU CAN RISE ABOVE THIS.
There are a lot of women who have launched and grown successful businesses from their homes. Some of their early businesses failed, until they got the one that succeeded.
Are you aware that is my 3rd business that crossed the 2 year mark successfully? My first two businesses failed. By the way, take note that I am not your typical 'hard-working, goal-getter, ambitious' kind of woman. In my teen years, 'Lazy' was attached to my name because I used to run away from hardwork 😃. I started while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. I am still battling it now. If I can still do a business with all this limitations, why do you think you cannot do it too🤔?
