Chapter 14 - Put The Pressure On Yourself

Pressure ti wa o!

Stop waiting for motivation from somewhere. It won't come.

Only about 2 per cent of people can work entirely without supervision. We call these people leaders.

Raise the bar on yourself. See yourself as a role model for others.

Your standards for yourself should be twice as high as the standards any person can set for you.

Go the extra mile; start a little earlier, work a little harder, and stay a little longer.

Your self-esteem is equal to the reputation you have with yourself.

Work as though you had only one day to get your most important job done.

Play the deadline game. Set an imaginary deadline and beat it.

Under the magnifying glass, the sun can burn any object it is focused on.

There is so much we can achieve when we settle to identify what things hold us back.

80 per cent of the constraints (what holds us back) are internal. - applying the 80/20 rule.

What holds you back from being productive can be as abstract as “someone else’s negative perception of you”

On the journey of productivity, taking responsibility is key

The most successful persons in the world at one point or another asked themselves this question. “What is in me that is holding me back?”

At the beginning of every single day, fish out something that represents a bottleneck, or a productivity choker from your life.

Take It One Oil Barrel At A Time

I love that quote about having “little” but being able to accomplish “much” as long as one concentrates tirelessly on one thing at a time.

One big lesson I learned here is that, when I have any huge task ahead of me, I should not SEE the huge task. I should only see the FIRST STEP.

Let’s say, I have written my list, I shouldn’t start looking at the whole list to see the bulk of the work I have to do, rather, I should do that first thing, take that first step.

Another thing I learned is, going as far as you can see.
I think this is important. Most times, we find it easy to worry about the unseen, and thus leave the seen undone and unchecked.

Take a leap of faith, don’t wait for the net before you jump.
I will put it this way, “Our faith decides our fate”

Get started. Take that first step. Then the next.

PRACTICE CREATIVE PROCRASTINATION

Don't procrastinate mindlessly, do it on purpose.

You can't do everything you set out to do.

Eat the frogs, and procrastinate on the tadpoles.

Procrastinate on low-value activities.

For less important tasks that do not make much of a contribution to tonylur life in any case procrastinate, outsource, delegate, or eliminate.

Decide on your priorities and posteriorities

Priority - something you do more of & sooner
Posteriorities - something you do less of & later

You can get your time and life under control only to the degree to which you discontinue lower-value activities.

Learn to say no
Say no, politely
Say no, early
Say no, clearly,
Sa no, graciously,
Say no, firmly.

Chapter 4
Consider the Consequences.

The degree to which you concentrate and apply your time, knowledge, and powers, to one particular channel shows how much success you’ll have in it.

A superior thinker is recognized by his or her ability to accurately predict the consequences of doing or not doing something.

Considering the potential consequence of a task helps you determine how important that task is.

Always think “Long term”

Long-term thinking improves the short-term decisions you make about your life.
(When you think long-term, start from where you are… and move forward)

Successful people have a clear future orientation.

Always ask yourself, “Is my action today consistent with the kind of future I desire?”

Whatever you consider an “important” task must have a long-term potential consequence.

Before you start anything, ask yourself what are the potential consequences of doing or not doing such a task.

Making short-term sacrifices gives you long-term rewards.

Motivation cannot come unless you have a motive

Time must pass. The question you must ask is how you use it and where you are going to end up at the end of the weeks and months that pass.

There will never be enough time to do everything you have to do.
Do the most consequential tasks first and the least consequential never.

Always ask yourself…
“What is the most valuable use of my time right now?”
Or
“What is my biggest frog at the moment?”
Eat that frog!
Do that task.

At The Productivity Camp, we are now 4 days into our reading challenge today where we are reading EAT THAT FROG! by Brian Tracy.

Today is Day 4 but I thought I might just share the lessons I have learned from each day and going forward I will keep sharing with you all.

Chapter 1: Set The Table
I learned the following 💎

• Think on paper.

• Get clarity of your goals and objectives.

• It is a waste of time to do very well something that you should not do at all.

• Set a deadline for your written goals.

• Make a list of your goals and organize that list into Priority and Sequence.

• Take action on your plans immediately.

• Resolve to do something every single day that moves you toward your major goals.

• Don’t miss a day.

• When you have clarity on your goals you’d be excited about achieving them.

• Every morning take action on the most important task you can accomplish to achieve your most important goal.

My notes on Chapter 2

According to Alan Lakein quoted in chapter 2 of Eat That Frog, “Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.
That's stuck with me.

This chapter says one man can eat an elephant. If he eats it one bit at a time.

The ability to think, plan and decide is your most powerful tool for overcoming procrastination & increasing productivity.

One minute of planning saves 10 minutes in ex*****on

Make three types of lists. Master list, monthly list, daily list.

When you plan your day, start with the end in mind and work backwards till the present moment.

Things I have noted in Chapter 3

The 20% represent the “Vital few” whole 80% represents the “Trivial many”

If you have a list of ten items you to do, two of those items will turn out to be worth five or ten times more than the other eight items put together.

Focus on “vital” activities, not many trivial accomplishments.

The most valuable tasks you can do each day are often the hardest and most complex

Resist the temptation to clear up small things first.

Time management is having control over what you do NEXT!

“YOU MUST GRADUATE WITH A FIRST CLASS”

My parents drummed these words in my ears uncountable times when I was studying at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

(MAKE SURE YOU READ TILL THE END)

That was not the first time I was under pressure from my parents to do something, but I guess that was one pressure I subscribed to.

Coming from a background of multiple failures. Such as

- repeating multiple classes in secondary schools (I spent a total of 9 years instead of 6 in secondary school)

- failing every O-level exam I wrote since 2015 (I wrote 8 O level Exams, and never had a credit pass in maths)

- dropping out of my NCE program in my final year (because I still couldn’t get a credit in maths, so I wouldn’t get my certificate)

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN UNDER PRESSURE SINCE I WAS A KID!

1.
When I was a kid I was under pressure to stop bedwetting, because I couldn’t stop until I was 17 years old

2.
You’re a confused child - My Dad to me.
I hated those words. I hated it because it felt true, I was always confused about things I should or shouldn’t do.

I could do almost everything, because I had so much talent, but everyone expected me to do something and do it well. Well, I always failed them.

3.
My younger sister whom I was older than with 3 years got into the university before me and even graduated before me.

(I can recall that one day, my parents called me and said, “One day, your sister will meet you in that your class and get ahead of you because you’re very unserious.)

I CAN GO ON…

But why the pressure?

Why did I have to go through all that?
(I hated myself, I was having suicidal thoughts, I cried many times, I suffered from low self-esteem, etc.)

So much pressure!!!
BUT WHY???

Now let’s talk about YOU…

YOU ARE PROBABLY UNDER PRESSURE AS WELL!!!

Right now, in the past, or the future!

Pressure is an almost constant phenomenon.

But WHY? You may ask.
Why all this pressure?

Here’s why.

Pressure is needed to intensify growth. And it starts right from the day you were born.

1. Your mum “PUSHED” you out into the world

2. You were smacked the moment you were born, just so you could cry.

3. You had to fall multiple times, as you learned to walk. While your parents cheered you on.

4. As you grew your parents asked you if your mates had two heads for coming 1st in class while you came 5th or 8th.

5. You had to impress a girl you liked.

6. It goes on and on.

But as you mature, you begin to realize that you have to CHOOSE YOUR PRESSURE!

Pressure is when the egg cracks and the chicks step out into the light.

Pressure is when the tree’s bark cracks open just so it can grow bigger.

Pressure is the seedling trying to shoot out of the darkness in the soil.

If you just grow, you must subscribe to the right pressure.

Pressure should not pull you down!
Instead, it should lift you.

And if pressure gives you scars, convert those scars into wisdom marks.

I have come to the end of this writ.

I MADE UP MY MIND TO COME OUT WITH A FIRST CLASS!

From the very first day, I stepped into the university. In fact, before that day.

Why? I wanted to prove a point.
I wanted to prove a point to every failure I had in the past.

I was determined to make pressure work out for my good.

And I did.
It wasn’t easy, not one bit.
Just as your journey towards success at any phase of your life would not be easy.

Whether it is financial, material, or spiritual success, success comes with pressure.
And you must make your success work for your good.
Always!

Steal Time. Like a thief - in the Night.

Last year, around October, robbers broke into our house. Twice.

The first time, it was in the night.

Just like the rest of the folks at home, I was sleeping soundly. Except for my younger cousin, Emma, who happened to be awake. (Truth is, he couldn't have stopped the robbery but he carefully observed).

According to him, the burglar walked around the house, perhaps to be sure no one was awake.

Next, he broke the front door (a wooden door we had been using for about eighteen years since we built the house.)

Somehow, he didn't enter the room where I was sleeping with my elder brother and cousin. (I was convinced he was scared we’d wake up and beat the living hell out of him. (Lol🥲 I am kidding.)

He went into my sister's room and stole her phone and laptop. He managed to wipe out the money in her bank account as well. And that was all.

He left just like that.

He didn't even care to close the door behind him. (Impossible, it was broken.)

I'm going somewhere, follow me.

I've always wondered why Jesus mentioned that he was coming to the earth a second time like a thief in the night.
Why would he compare himself to a thief? And then in the night?

I'll tell you why.

Jesus already told his followers that they should ‘work’ while it is ‘day’ because the ‘night’ comes when no man works.

When we work, we spend time. It doesn't matter what you do, the more you work the more time is spent and the less time you have.
So Jesus, clearly meant he wasn't going to “waste” any time in doing so.
You see, the thief is a master of time.

He steals time.
What regular humans must've spent time working for - Money, goods, etc.

The real value of anything is time. Not money.

When a man is robbed, he begins to calculate how much time he has spent working to get that thing, or how much time he will spend to get it again.

Either way, money is a derivative of time.
Every day of your life, you work. Going to school, or even your business and jobs, and church, etc.

If most of the things you spend your time doing equal, work, work, and more work. It's time to make a change.

Here's a better way, work in the day. Steal more time at night.

Unlike the burglar who steals material possessions, you are only allowed to steal only the immaterial valuables.

Such as Knowledge, Wisdom, Opportunities, Ideas, and Time.

The more you steal time, the more valuable you become.

When the rest of the world is working at day, if you have stolen enough time, they'd come to you to pay to give to them.

That's how you get rich. Not by working so hard. But by stealing more time.

And stealing time can be FREE.
You steal time for free by breaking the banks of wisdom encoded in books, podcasts, seminars, YouTube value videos etc.

When people write books, they have so much time hidden in it for you to steal from.

Study the life of the greats and watch how they live their lives. Emulate them and carefully, craft your life using theirs as a guide.

You are ten times richer when you have more time than more money in your bank.
When you begin to spend both, you'll know.

Save Time and Steal More Time!
