Addiction doesn’t start the way many people assume. It is rarely about seeking pleasure alone, it is often rooted in coping.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and other global health bodies, a significant proportion of substance use begins as a response to underlying issues such as stress, trauma, mental health challenges, and adverse life experiences. For many individuals, substances become a way to numb pain, manage anxiety, or temporarily escape difficult realities.

This shifts how we should respond: from judgment to understanding, from punishment to support. Effective recovery requires addressing not just the substance use, but the root causes, psychological, social, and environmental.

At House of Refuge, we see this every day. Behind every addiction is a story. And with the right support, that story can change.
