WHY DO WE PRAY FOR NATIONS/ELECTIONS?
People often asked, โIf God is sovereign, why
pray?โ The simple answer is that the sovereign
God in His sovereignty has willed to be influenced by the prayer of His people.
So, now to be precised, why do we pray for elections?
The following are some of the reasons:
* THE BIBLE COMMANDS US TO PRAY:
If thereโs any good reason for doing anything at all in life, itโs to obey God, which has both temporary and
eternal benefits.
So we engage in praying, particularly now for
Nigeriaโs 2019 elections because we are
commanded to pray for those who are in
leadership (2 Tim. 1-4). This should certainly
include those who are vying to become leaders.
We should not wait for leaders to be elected or
selected before we move into obedient prayer for
those in authority.
* GOD ALONE CHOOSES LEADERS:
We believe God is all-knowing--who alone knows the right people for this nation; He is almighty God, who has the power to, [and will] pull down and raise up leaders in this nation
according to His plan, irrespective of men's agendas, propaganda and devices, and if only we, individual and collective Christians, give ourselves to a persistent aggressive prevailing prayer of intercession.
* FOR A PEACEFUL ATMOSPHERE:
In prayer, we invite the Lord into the process of
electing those leaders who will ultimately allow
us to โlive peaceful and quite lives in all
godliness and holinessโ
That is, we pray for God to choose leaders who
will allow and create an atmosphere conducive
enough for freedom of worship. That is, to be able to have a country where we have an increased
window of opportunity for the church to pray and
evangelize.
* CHRISTIANS DETERMINE THE DESTINY OF NATIONS โ Psalm 2:8:
We believe God has given us, Christians, the
privilege and mandate to hold nations, including Nigeria before Him
in prayers until His will is done in every area of
our nations.
In other words, we believe that the solutions to
our nation's problems will not first and foremost
be found in our politicians or at the state houses.
Our nationโs solutions will first and foremost be
found in Godโs house, through christiansโ
personal and cooperate sincere, fervent and
regular prevailing prayers.
* TO RAISE GODLY LEADERS:
โRighteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a
disgrace to any people. โ (Prov. 14:34 NASB).
We pray for elections because we believe that in answers to prayers of His children, God will cause
the selection of leaders who understand and
lead according to Godโs righteous standard
which will, in effect, bring great blessings to the
nation.
* TO FULFILL A GOD GIVEN DIRECT MANDATE:
Above all, we give ourselves to prayer for the
Nigeriaโs 2019 elections in response to a God
given direct mandate in Jeremiah 1:10 and
51:20- to use us as His instrument to root out
and pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to
build and to plant in this nation.
That is, we gather to pray for this nation and the
coming elections in obedience to God given
leading to gather intercessors and mobilize
aggressive intercession to draw down God's mighty hands to the pulling down of Satan's strongholds and in exposing and breaking the back bones of evil strongmen working against the purpose of God for this nation.
And also to cause a peaceful and successful election processes-- in removing and choosing leaders in accordance with God's plan and purpose for this nation.
