Hakim Ziyech scored the only goal of the game as the Blues deservedly beat the Premier League leaders 1-0 in a tight FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Before this fully deserved 1-0 victory, the German had never previously got the better of Guardiola as a coach.

When the pair had previously squared off in Germany, they were never quite competing on a level playing field, even after Tuchel had swapped Mainz for Borussia Dortmund. There was just no stopping Guardiola's Bayern Munich.

However, Tuchel has since moved on to bigger and better things, taking Paris Saint-Germain to a first Champions League final last year before being appointed as Frank Lampard's successor in January.

As at the Parc des Princes, Tuchel now has the resources to rival those of Guardiola at City, and he has now shown himself capable of making a major impression on English football.

He's already had a massive impact at Stamford Bridge, of course, losing just two of his first 19 games in charge of Chelsea. And just this week, he led his new team to the semi-finals of the Champions League, meaning the Blues could yet meet City again this season, with a European Cup on the line.

https://www.talk4spots.com.ng/2021/03/champions-league-quarter-final-draw.html Elsewhere in the last eight, Chelsea will take on surprise package Porto and Bayern Munich face a re-match of the 2020 final with PSG
Liverpool have been paired with Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, while Manchester City will take on Borussia Dortmund.Elsewhere, Chelsea must try and navigate a route past surprise package Porto and there will be a re-match between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain – the two finalists from 2020.
All contests at this stage of elite European competition are mouth-watering, but the draw for the last eight has thrown up some intriguing tussles.Liverpool and Real Madrid have plenty of history, with the Blancos emerging victorious against the Reds in the 2018 final as they conquered the continent for a 13th time, and will be expected to produce more fireworks when they lock horns.
Manchester City remain in the hunt for a historic quadruple this season, but Pep Guardiola’s efforts to deliver a first Champions League crown to the Etihad Stadium will be tested to the full by Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and an excitingBorussia Dortmund side.
Porto , who prevailed as underdogs under Jose Mourinho 17 years ago, stunned Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus in the last 16 and face another tough task against a Chelsea side that are yet to suffer defeat under Thomas Tuchel.
Bayern Munich retain their grip on the most prestigious of prizes for now, but they were pushed all the way by PSG in last season’s showpiece and will need no reminding of the considerable threat posed to them by the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Semi-final encounters are pencilled in for April 27 and 28, with the second legs once again being held the following week, and all of those still involved have their sights set on a final appearance in Istanbul on May 29.
Who is the top scorer in the 2020-21 Champions League? There are superstar performers to be found across the board as we reach the business end of the Champions League.

Dortmund striker Haaland tops the goal charts on 10 as things stand , with the prolific Norwegian the only man to have reached double figures.
PSG forwards Neymar and Mbappe have six efforts apiece, with the latter netting a stunning hat-trick against Barcelona at Camp Nou in the last round to help his side progress.Olivier Giroud also has six strikes to his name, and remains in the hunt for more, with Alvaro Morata, Marcus Rashford and Youssef En-Nesyri the others to hit that mark.
Bayern talisman Robert Lewandowski sits on five goals so far, with the potential there for more to come, with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah matching that tally as they look to fire their respective sides to more European glory.

Arsenal has just dropped points against Burnley in a game that they should have put to bed before half time.

It was a day to forget for Granit Xhaka, whose pass went straight to the body of Chris Woods for Burnley’s equaliser. Here is our Arsenal player ratings:

Bernd Leno – 6

Had a hand in Burnley’s goal as he should have cleared his lines instead of trusting Xhaka. But made some good saves to redeem himself.

Calum Chambers – 6

He was a surprising pick at right-back and offered much more defensively. Needs to do better when he joins the attack.

David Luiz – 6

He showed why Mikel Arteta still wants to keep him by ensuring Burnley didn’t win the aerial battles.

Pablo Mari – 6

As cool on the pitch as he looks and gets the job done with minimal fuss.

Kieran Tierney – 6

We have come to expect more from him, but he delivered as good a performance as he could against this opponent.

Thomas Partey – 7

Arsenal fans will wish he can stay fit. He is a master of long balls from the back and was the best Arsenal player on the pitch.

Granit Xhaka – 3

Has had a good time in recent weeks, but that intercepted pass for Burnley’s goal was a horrible one and that is what you get from Xhaka on occasions.

Bukayo Saka – 4

One of his worst days in the Arsenal shirt as he missed some good chances to help the Gunners kill the game off.

Martin Odegaard – 5

Started brightly and seemed to struggle to get back in the game when Burnley equalized. Took too many wayward shots in the second half.

Willian – 6

Slightly above average today, put it this way, he has been a lot worse.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 5

Started the game brightly but after his goal we almost didn’t see him.

Substitutes

Alexandre Lacazette – 5

Could do nothing after coming on apart from drawing fouls from Burnley’s players.

Nicolas Pepe – 4

Brought on to rescue the game, but he missed the best chance of the match.

Dani Ceballos – 6

Almost scored a late winner, but the post rescued Burnley.

The Premier League have explained why Silva’s decisive goal stood. Rodri was trotting back from an obvious offside position, but once Mings chested it down and attempted to make a pass, he effectively played Rodri back onside. Here’s the relevant law: “A player in an offside position, receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, is not considered to have gained an advantage.” Is the law an ass? Well, Mings wouldn’t have played the ball had Rodri not been where he was in the first place. You can understand why Villa are aggrieved, but it would seem City have right on their side. A long evening of heated debate stretches out ahead on social media, which is one of the many reasons your humble MBM hack doesn’t go on it.The win puts City top of the Premier League! That’s the first time they’ve got there all season, and they’re now the ninth team to take pole during this wild and wonderful season. Now on 38 points after 18 games, they depose Leicester City (played 19) on goal difference. United (played 18, 37 points) have the chance to regain top spot by winning at Fulham. John Brewin is all over the 8.15pm kick-0ff. Villa meanwhile remain in 11th position on 26, though they’ve only played 16 matches so far.

FULL TIME: Manchester City 2-0 Aston Villa

It could have ended 8-3, 2-4, or anything in between. But this is how it ends. What a sensationally entertaining game of football. Just a shame there’s a whiff of controversy over Bernardo Silva’s winner, Rodri getting away with interfering from an offside position. But on balance, it would be tough to argue that City didn’t deserve the win over the piece. Villa can be proud of their performance, though.90 min +2: Four extra minutes. Most of the first two are taken up with celebratory faff. Villa are understandably deflated. They gave this everything.

GOAL! Manchester City 2-0 Aston Villa (Gundogan 90 pen)

Gundogan has missed tonight from four yards, and two yards, but he makes no mistake from 12.

City nearly scored a fourth early in the second half as Mendy tipped over Rodri's header at point-blank range, and though Chelsea shut up shop, it was one of very few positives they could take from a concerning day at Stamford Bridge.

There were only half chances for either side as City took their foot off the gas - Mateo Kovacic struck wide, as did De Bruyne - while Timo Werner registered just one shot as his wait for a goal approaches 800 minutes.

Team news

Lampard recalled Silva and Zouma to his defence after the pair sat out the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. Christensen and Rudiger both dropped out while Kovacic was preferred to Jorginho in midfield.

There were alterations further afield too as Giroud and Hudson-Odoi dropped to the bench as Werner started up front along with the fit-again Ziyech.

The big news for the visitors was that Zack Steffen started his first Premier League game in place of the absent Ederson, who is reportedly self-isolating.

Torres was also absent as Foden started in his place while Zinchenko was selected at left back in place of Ake.

Chelsea did get a consolation through Hudson-Odoi in stoppage time, turning home at the far post from Mason Mount's delivery across the face of goal.

The result means Chelsea have taken just three points from a possible 18 against teams in the top seven this season as questions begin to be asked of Lampard's side having looked so watertight approaching December.

For City though, this was a statement as several sides jostle to be Liverpool's closest challengers, as Guardiola's side made it 11 unbeaten in all competitions.

What the managers said

Man City boss Pep Guardiola: "The result is incredible for us but I'm delighted with the way my team played.

"To win here in Stamford Bridge... you cannot win titles playing the way we were, day by day not getting better. In this competition, you have to play. First is the game, and after the results come.
