๐จ Election Transparency Debate Sparks Reactions Ahead of 2027
Nigerian lawmakers have rejected a proposal that would require presiding officers to upload polling unit results electronically in real time to the IReV portal. Instead, they chose to maintain the 2022 system, which allows manual signing, stamping, and result transfer based on guidelines set by the electoral commission.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that electronic transmission remains part of the process, similar to the 2022 elections.
However, some senators, including Enyinnaya Abaribe, disagreed with the decision, accusing the Senate leadership of altering proceedings and calling for clearer laws supporting electronic result transmission.
The decision has also drawn criticism from political figures like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, who described it as a setback that could reduce transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has triggered strong reactions online, with hashtags like trending, although public protests have remained minimal so far.
The bill will now move to a joint conference committee with the House of Representatives for final harmonization before it is sent for presidential approval.
๐ What are your thoughts on this development? Do you think electronic transmission of results should be mandatory?
