๐ณ๐ฌ A joint press conference was held on Tuesday, 29th July 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria, by the African Union Sports Council Region 2 (AUSC Region 2) and the African Military Sports Organization (OSMA) to announce a proposed partnership between the two bodies.
๐ธMajor General Maikano Abdullahi, OSMA President and member of the AUSC Technical Committee on Sport Development, gave the opening remarks. He highlighted that the partnership aims to strengthen collaboration between civilian and military institutions across West Africa.
๐นKey objectives include promoting joint sports training, event organization, and community engagement, identifying and developing athletic talent within the military, and using sports to foster morale, teamwork, and national pride.
๐ธSpeaking on behalf of the Chairperson of the AUSC Region 2 Council of Sports Ministers, Mr. Shehu Dikko, the 15 Member States of Region 2, the AU Commissioner for Sports, and the AUSC Secretariat in Cameroon, AUSC Region 2 Interim Secretary General, Chief (Dr) Michael Shamsu Mustapha, commended Major General Maikano for his leadership and contributions to sports development.
๐นChief Mustapha emphasized that the partnership is more than a formal agreement it is a declaration to leverage sport for peace, stability, regional integration, and the fight against illegal migration, drug abuse, violence, and crime. He noted that this initiative aligns with the African Unionโs Agenda 2063.
๐ธIn closing, Major General Maikano announced the formation of a joint committee to oversee implementation and called on the media to support the initiative across their platforms.
