SMILE MEDIA TV🚨SECOND CHANCE: A 500-level nursing student expelled by Madonna University, Rivers State, over a viral TikTok challenge has appealed to the institution to reconsider the decision and give her and other affected students another opportunity.
The student was among those sanctioned after a video of nursing students dancing inside the university’s teaching hospital went viral. The video, part of the “Gen Z nurses” trend, showed students dancing in areas including a waiting area, staircase and bus.
In an emotional video, the student expressed concern about telling her mother about the expulsion after spending years studying nursing.
“How do I explain to my mother? I’m one of the dozen students that was expelled. After all these years, how do I explain to my mother?” she said.
Madonna University confirmed that the video was recorded within its teaching hospital and subsequently took disciplinary action against the students involved.
While some Nigerians have supported the university’s decision, others have called for leniency, arguing that the students should be given an opportunity to learn from the incident.
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has also appealed to the university to reconsider the sanctions. NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, acknowledged that the students’ conduct was inappropriate but said expulsion could have serious long-term consequences.
“Expulsion is, by far, a grave punishment. Beyond the immediate academic consequences, it can fundamentally alter the course of a young person’s life,” Afeez said.
NANS urged Madonna University to replace the expulsion with a stern warning and appealed for clemency.
“We appeal to the compassion and clemency of the Management of Madonna University to please save their future and give them a second chance,” the association said.
NANS, NUNSA and other stakeholders are continuing calls for the university to reconsider the sanctions and allow the affected students to continue their education.
