Andrés Escobar: the match of his life

Football is often the setting for amazing stories, but sometimes also awful events. That was the case for Andrés Escobar, the Colombian defender, who lost his life over a football match. In 1994, Colombia were taking part in the '94 World Cup in the United-States. After losing their first match, the Cafeteros had to react against the host nation. And something dramatic happened in the 35th minute, Andrés Escobar knocked the ball into his own net and sealed his team's fate. This goal also sealed Escobar's fate, killed in cold blood as he left a bar in Medellin, shot six times in the head. Legend has it his murderer, Humberto Castro, shouted "gol" for each of the shots he fired. 😢
