Two SAMBO certification seminars were conducted for the first time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this week.
The SAMBO Union of Asia and Oceania conducted the 1st South East Asia Regional Referees Certification seminar on the 14-15th of December hosted by Malaysia SAMBO Association under the Presidency of Mr. Johnathan Wong. 21 candidate referees from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam took part in the event. The seminar was conducted by FIAS International Referees Carmen Tang (Malaysia) and Stella Sjahlim (Indonesia). Theory and Video exams were conducted on the 14th & 15th and whereby practical evaluation took place on the 16th of December at the 2023 SouthEast Asian Championship and on the 17th of December during the ASEAN Open Children's Sambo Festival.
On the same occasion, the Chairman of the FIAS Technical Commission Professor Sergey Tabakov conducted the first ever FIAS SAMBO OPEN Certification seminar for coaches from South East Asia and other nations. 24 candidate coaches from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam participated in the intensive training seminar. Coaches who successfully pass the exam will be awarded a Level 1 coaching qualification.
On the 16th December, Malaysia Sambo Association officiated the SouthEast Asian Sambo Championship and the First ASEAN Open Childrenโs Sambo Festival 2023 at 10a.m in VIVA MALL, Jalan Loke Yew, Kuala Lumpur as the Official Venue Sponsor. A total of 284 participants from Indonesia, Thailand, Filipina, Vietnam, Singapore and the host Malaysia participated in this Championship. The opening ceremony was officiated by Director of Sports Promotion and Development from The Ministry of Youth & Sports, Y.Bhg Tuan Sabran Bin Abdul Bahar, Assistant Treasurer of Malaysia Olympic Council, Y.Bhg Datuk Mohd Nasir,Director Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Regional Youth and Sports Department, Y.Bhg Tuan Asmori, The Russian Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Naiyl M.Latypov, Vice Consul of The Philippines Embassy , Ms.Kara Denise, Cultural Officer of The Phillipines Embassy, Ms.Jesher Micheal, Executive Director of Sambo Union of Asia & Oceania Mr. Anvar Mukhameddov representing the President of Sambo Union of Asia & Oceania, Mr. Alamjon Mullaev, Director General of Sambo Union of Asia & Oceania, Mr. Suresh Gopi, President of SouthEast Asia Sambo, Mr. Krishna Bayu, and other prominent names from Sambo Sports, and official sponsors.
Mr. Krishna in his opening speech has voiced his high hopes that this will be the beginning for SAMBO to be included in the 2025 SEA Games to be held in Thailand while Mr. Suresh congratulated the Malaysia Sambo Association for successfully organising the event in conjuction with the 85th Sambo Anniversary and thanking Mr. Gerard of Singapore and the Sambo Union of Asia and Oceania for the full support rendered to making this event possible. His Excellency Mr. Naiyl has expressed his full support and joy to see people from different regions coming together in unity and welcome the participants to join in more international sporting events. Last but not least, Y.Bhg Tuan Sabran in his congratulatory speech is satisfied with the international exposure and growth of martial arts sports in Malaysia and hope for more such events to be conducted to promote unity amongst the countries.
The Championship kicked-off with 115 adult participants from Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia for Sports and Combat Sambo on 16th December . Also noted is the First ASEAN Childrenโs Sambo Festival also took place with 39 children from Vietnam, Indonesia , Singapore and the host country Malaysia on the 17th December. The Championship technical team was headed by Mr.Gerard Lim from Singapore as the Technical Director and assisted by Technical Secretaries, Mr.Arnold Silalahi and Mr.Zainal Abidin both from Indonesia.
The Malaysian contingent has managed to collect 9 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 15 bronze medals and subsequently ranked first overall Champion at the SEA Sambo Championship & Children's Sambo Festival 2023 this time. The Malaysian contingent won 4 gold medals at the 2023 SEA Sambo Championship, while another 5 gold medals were won at the 2023 Children's Sambo Festival. These 9 gold medals were won by the following athletes, Alyaa Yasmeen Binti Rosali, Nor Aina Faqihah Binti Norfaizal Hafize, Wan Nurul Aisyah Binti Wan Zakaria, Mohd Fakrul Izzat Bin Afandi, Muhammad Muhaimin Mikael Bin Mohd Asri, Ahmad Azfar Rizqin Bin Ahmad Arif, Muhammad Aiman Azhari Bin Tajudin, Nur Fasha Binti Zazali and Nurul Adriana Binti Abdullah.

Malaysia Sambo Association since its founding years of a decade ago has for the very first time garnered tremendous support both internationally and locally. It is in hope that this championship will find favour in a new generation of grassroots athletes as SAMBO is a martial art combinations of the best techniques there are in the world.
