I do think it takes a special skill to create without thinking. Without thinking of the end product, without thinking of an audience and without our own critical eye. I’ve struggled with this most of my life. I have no training and I am not a skilled artist but I’m trying to approach everything I do now without any expectation. It’s a mental state I have to get into before beginning. There are few things more terrifying than the first brush stroke on a blank canvas.
If I cannot be skilled, I will be honest . Didn’t Hemingway say something to that effect, linking honesty and bravery? After all he was Earnest!
Most influential artists weren’t particularly skilled but their art was a naked representation of themselves. Probably the biggest difference between bad art and unsettling genius is a heart on fire bled onto the page. I think of Frida and Dalí. Their work isn’t exquisite but it’s real and and raw. Their art transcends time and it allows us to connect emotionally with an artist, with a human we’ve never met. I find in Frida a kindred spirit. What greater legacy can there be?
