Rumphi District Council has cited improper waste management, open urination, and the lack of waste management equipment vehicle as the major factors contributing to poor sanitation at Rumphi Boma Main Market and the depot.

Speaking during a monthly clean-up exercise, the Council’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Officer, Godfrey Shumba, said some individuals, particularly taxi operators, are not using the public toilets provided in the two areas instead, they urinate behind kiosks.

Shumba further noted that the absence of a waste management equipment vehicle is hindering the Council’s ability to frequently collect garbage from the temporary dumping site at Kasalasala Market.

Despite the challenges, Shumba expressed optimism that sanitation in the area will improve through the monthly clean-up exercises being conducted by the Council.

In his remarks, one of the traders Samuel Kamanga commended the Council for organising the clean-up, saying it will help ensure the safety of people and their products.

Lunyina Youth Club participated in clean-up exercise at Rumphi boma organized by Rumphi District Council and Rumphi District Hospital.

This exercise is under Presidential Executive order Number 2 of 2026 promoting Sanitation Hygiene at public places.

Together we can make Rumphi District clean.

Lunyina Youth Club and Jaghala Youth Club had an inspiring learning and engagement session with Rumphi District Hospital Youth Friendly Health Services coordinator, HIV/AIDS protection specialist, Nursing and family planning specialist, Midwife specialist, We had also officer from Social Welfare and officer from Rumphi police station Victim support unit department.
key thematic area were: Gender Based Violence, Sexual Reproductive Health Right, HIV/AIDS protection, Abortion and constitution of Malawi (Crimes and its penalties).

We thank all partners for information session we had and everyone come to the session.

Zodiak Online has established that a growing number of young people in Rumphi Urban are abusing a locally made drug known as Ngilimbo, which users claim produces effects similar to those of co***ne and cuber.

Speaking to Zodiak Online, some users said the drug is commonly used because it helps them feel better when they are in stressful situations.

However, Rumphi District Council Youth Officer Ipyana Munthali said the matter was new to his office.

He said his office will now embark on awareness campaigns to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse.

During visits to some selling points, Zodiak Online found that Ngilimbo is sold at K500 per packet.
