DO YOU KNOW THIS CUTIE?

The Yellow Boxfish can be recognised by its box-shaped body, bright yellow colouration and black spots. The species occurs in tropical and temperate marine waters of the Indo-West Pacific.

A juvenile boxfish is about 5-8 cm in length. Adults can grow up to 45 cm. They inhabit coral and rocky reefs and are usually found at depths between 1 and 50 meters.

FISH FACTS !
Cuttlefish are referred to as the “chameleons of the sea” due to their color-changing abilities. They can do this even though they are completely color blind. They can even successfully change color to match their surroundings in complete darkness. Cuttlefish have not one, not two, but three hearts!

Within their bodies, cuttlefish have a long, oval bone called a cuttlebone. This bone is used to regulate buoyancy using chambers that may be filled with gas and/or water depending on where the cuttlefish is in the water column.

Cuttlefish can’t see color, but they can see polarized light, an adaptation which may aid in their ability to sense contrast and determine what colors and patterns to use when blending into their surroundings

is a wonderful organisation helping to promote and engage the general public in the wider message of marine ecosystem conservation. Through this top down approach to conservation the manta ray becomes the catalyst for change, engaging and motivating the general public, governments and local communities alike.

The next time you see a manta shoot the belly. The pattern on the belly is like a finger print. Send it to the good guys at MANTA TRUST and if it hasn’t been seen / documented before, you get to name the animal.
