EU Agency for Asylum - EUAA The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) is an EU Agency that supports EU+ countries in implementing the rules of the Common European Asylum System.

EUAA is an agency of the European Union that plays a key role in the concrete development of the Common European Asylum System. It was established with the aim of enhancing practical cooperation on asylum matters and helping Member States fulfil their European and international obligations to give protection to people in need. EUAA acts as a centre of expertise on asylum. It also provides support to Member States whose asylum and reception systems are under particular pressure.

The EUAA launched an analysis on displaced Ukrainians in Germany.

Germany is currently the main host country for people displaced from Ukraine. Between 2023 and early 2026, about 1.650 respondents participated in SAM—UKR and shared their experiences and future intentions.

👥 Key insights:
✔️ Most are of working age
✔️ Most women, but the gender gap is narrowing with more men arriving in recent years
✔️ Increasingly, whole families are present in Germany
✔️ Most come from Eastern regions of Ukraine, including Kharkiv and Donetsk
✔️ Almost half indicated plans for relatives or friends to join them in Germany

Наразі Німеччина є основною країною, яка приймає людей, переміщених з України.

У період з 2023 року до початку 2026 року близько 1650 респондентів взяли участь у SAM-UKR та поділилися своїм досвідом і планами на майбутнє.

👥 Ключові висновки:
✔️ Більшість — люди працездатного віку
✔️ Переважають жінки, але гендерний розрив зменшується, оскільки останніми роками прибуває більше чоловіків

📊 The EUAA’s latest highlights developments in asylum applications and recognition rates across the EU+ in the first half of 2026.

🇧🇩 Bangladesh has long been among the main countries of origin for asylum applications. At first instance, the EU+ recognition rate for Bangladeshi applicants was 3%.

Since 12 June 2026, Bangladesh has been included in the EU’s first common list of safe countries of origin, alongside 🇨🇴 Colombia, 🇪🇬 Egypt, 🇮🇳 India, 🇽🇰 Kosovo, 🇲🇦 Morocco and 🇹🇳 Tunisia. The designation is intended to support faster processing and reduce pending cases.

🤝 This week, the EUAA is pleased to host 16 colleagues from four 🇪🇺 Justice and Home Affairs agencies for a one-week staff exchange at our headquarters in Malta.

Colleagues from Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, EU Agency eu-LISA, Europol and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights are joining EUAA colleagues to learn about our work and share expertise, experiences and different ways of working.

The JHAAN Staff Exchange Programme was launched in 2023 to strengthen cooperation and knowledge sharing across the EU’s Justice and Home Affairs agencies.

📊 Applications from some of the main countries of origin changed significantly in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

🇦🇫 Applications from Afghan nationals fell by 7%, while 🇻🇪 Venezuelan applications decreased by nearly a third. 🇹🇷 Applications from Turkish nationals also declined, while 🇧🇩 Bangladeshi applications increased and 🇪🇬 Egyptian applications remained broadly unchanged.

Despite the decrease, applications from Venezuelan nationals remained relatively high, amid ongoing instability and visa-free access to the Schengen area.

On 2-3 September, the EUAA brought together asylum officials from across the Western Balkans for the regional training rollout on the ‘Application of Exclusion Clauses to persons undeserving of international protection.’

The application of exclusion clauses in asylum procedures can present complex legal and factual challenges, requiring a clear understanding of the applicable legal framework and careful assessment of the relevant facts and evidence.

The training combined technical legal sessions, practical role-play and exchange of experiences to strengthen capacity to assess potential exclusion cases fairly and consistently, supporting high-quality asylum procedures across the region.

This activity was supported through the EU-funded programme ‘EU Regional Support to Protection-Sensitive Migration Management Systems in the Western Balkans – Phase III.’

📉 Asylum applications fell by 17% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

🇫🇷 France, 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇪🇸 Spain, 🇩🇪 Germany and 🇬🇷 Greece received the highest numbers of applications, despite applications decreasing in four of the five countries.

The EUAA is inviting higher education institutions with expertise in asylum or human rights, in potential partnership with legal clinics and research organisations, to apply for funding to support research and analysis on international protection jurisprudence.

The funded project will contribute to the EUAA Case Law Database, enhancing access to relevant asylum case law, strengthening information exchange on emerging issues in asylum appeals, and supporting the effective implementation of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) following the Pact on Migration and Asylum.

The funded project will help:
✅ Collect and summarise relevant asylum jurisprudence in English
✅ Register judgments in the EUAA Case Law Database
✅ Draft analytical reports on key asylum case law topics

🌈 For 🇲🇹, we are highlighting EUAA’s resources which help address the specific needs of LGBTIQ+ applicants.

A recently published factsheet on jurisprudence related to LGBTIQ applicants in international protection, highlights current trends and evolving case law identified between January 2025 and August 2026.

The factsheet examines case law from the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Court of Human Rights and national courts across EU+ countries.

Some key points in the factsheet:
🔷 Criminalisation of same-sex relations remains an important indicator of the risk of persecution, particularly where it is combined with violence, discrimination, arbitrary enforcement, or ineffective state protection.
🔷 Even where same-sex relations are not explicitly criminalised, other legal provisions may be used to arrest or target LGBTIQ persons.
🔷 Sexual orientation and gender identity should not be assessed in isolation, but in conjunction with other relevant factors, such as political opinion, health status, and social and economic exclusion.
🔷 Transgender persons may face forms and levels of discrimination, violence and social exclusion that differ fundamentally from those experienced by homosexual individuals in the country of origin.
🔷 Persecution related to sexual orientation or gender identity can extend also to those perceived as belonging to the LGBTIQ community or those advocating for LGBTIQ rights.
