These are truly valuable words from Jiu-Jitsu Professor Master John Danaher.
They don't apply only to Jiu-Jitsu. They are equally relevant throughout life. Whenever we face challenges and difficulties, I hope we never choose to confront them half-heartedly. Instead, may we face them with full commitment, confidence, and determination.
The most dangerous move to attempt in Jiu Jitsu is half a move. When you enter into any given move you inevitable expose yourself to risk. You’ve left a sound defensive stance in favor of the potential benefits of an attack. A half way committed move means you leave the safety of your initial stance - that’s a risk - but with so little commitment that there is almost not chance of success - so the one that justifies taking the risk is now highly unlikely to happen. You’ve taken all the risk of a move with none of the potential reward - that’s a disaster waiting to happen. If you’re going to take a risk there has to be a potential reward big enough to justify the risk. That means a score or submission. That’s always going to require a substantial commitment on your part. Going in half cocked exposes you to all the downside and none of the potential upside. So if you’re going to go - go!
