In the old model of ageing, starting at 30 we lose memory, mobility and muscle with every year. Our bones become thinner, muscle fibre around the lungs weakens, and ribs collapse in. This blocks us from getting air in and out efficiently.
The lung capacity decreases 12% between 30 and 50, and 30% between 20 and 80.
This forces us to breathe faster & harder, which creates stress, high blood pressure, immune disorders and anxiety.
The old model of ageing is true if we don’t train our muscles and stimulate blood flow to the bones & joints. If you don’t use them, you’ll lose them.
But: our lungs are fuelled by muscles, which we can train. And by using the muscles we increase the blood flow, which in turn brings nutrients to the bones and joints, so that they stay healthy and strong.
I believe that ageing doesn’t have to go hand in hand with deterioration. I know that we can stay healthy and fit until old age. And I’d like to have a life full of energy, also later on.

In the year 2000, the University of Buffalo set out to see the results of the Framingham Study for themselves. They gathered 30 years of data of over 1000 subjects.

Can you guess their results?
The greatest indicator of lifespan = Lung Capacity

That’s great for yogi’s and free divers, but what about normal people?

How can a person with deteriorated lungs heal & strengthen them?
I’ll share you much more over time.

For now it’s good to know that it’s not so much about the size of your inhalation, much more about the exhalation!
It’s easy to fill the lungs with air. But to get that air out completely and slowly, takes conscious effort.
Most of us are only using 10% of the range of motion of our diaphragm. Next time you're breathing out, just keep on going when you think you're done.
You’ll notice that there is so much space for more efficient breathing. And as your breathing rate determines your heart rate and your state of stress, this is the best mechanism to control your ageing process. (It’s FREE!)
Want to bring this in to practice? Train your body for 5+ minutes a day to exhale completely (but slowly!). The inhalation will follow automatically.

In the 1980’s the Framingham Study set out to find if lung size correlates to longevity. They gathered 20 years of data from 5200 subjects.

Their result: the greatest indicator of lifespan isn’t diet, weight, nor exercise, it’s lung capacity.

Smaller, less efficient lungs were correlated to patients getting ill and dying sooner.

Larger lungs equaled a longer life.

In the researchers words: “Our ability to breathe fully is literally a measure of living capacity.”

But before you start breathing deep gasps of air, it’s important to know that it’s not at all about circulating more air, instead it’s about more efficient breathing.

It’s much more about using the full range of motion of your diaphragm, and allowing this to relax your heart rate, relax your nervous system, and relax your (r)aging process.

In the words of B.K.S. Iyengar “A yogi's life is not measured by the number of his days but by the number of his breaths”

How many breaths do you take per minute?

“Some of the best days in your life haven’t happened yet.”

I used to say, each year life only got better and it will continue to go this way.

This year, it’s been hard to see this. However, there’s so much that I can’t see.

The future for instance, and all the wonder that it has to offer.

And I tried my best
To embrace the darkness in which I swim
Now walkin' back, down this mountain
The strength of a turnin' tide
Oh the wind's so soft, and my skin
Yeah the sun was so hot upon my side
Oh lookin' out, at this happiness
I searched for it between the sheets
Oh feelin' blind, and realized
All I was searchin' for was me
Oh oh, all I was searchin' for was me

Keep your head up 😉

This morning I skipped practice, and as a result of not getting my usual morning dopamine rush my mind started to wander in the past.

This turned out to be exactly what I needed.

I’m usually too busy to let my mind wander, filling my days with productive things and my “me-time” with yoga, reading and meditation.

Not today. I dwelled in the past, imagined the future, and felt s**t in the present. By allowing this natural process to happen with awareness, I became aware of some fundamental emotional needs that are not being fulfilled right now. Long story short, I feel lonely... 😛

Going through this process, thinking, feeling and writing about it, helped me to get super clear on some deep personal matters. And now that I did what I had to do I feel clarity, relief, and am better able to accept what is.

Turns out that also yoga & meditation practice can be distracting me from what is important in the moment. These practices make me feel amazing, but I also need to experience the other side of the Pendulum to go forward towards balance, harmony and personal growth.
