He Who Takes Initiative Wins... So, What Are You Waiting For?

"He who takes initiative wins" isn't just a motivational catchphrase. It's a scientifically proven truth backed by decades of research in organizational psychology, management, and behavioral economics.

Initiative is the ability to take the reins, change the course of events, and spark transformation instead of waiting for it. And the data is crystal clear: it's the decisive factor that separates winners from spectators.

What Science Reveals
"Opportunity doesn't knock twice... It walks past you every single day. The difference is who reaches out to grab it."

According to a study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, individuals with a proactive personality secure more job offers, receive more callbacks, and command higher salaries than their passive counterparts who wait for opportunities to come to them.

Graduates with high self-efficacy – the deep-seated belief that they can influence their environment – search for jobs more actively, prepare better for interviews, and land more second-round interviews.

Initiative in Action
In a major manufacturing company, employees who took the initiative on their own launched eco-innovation projects. Despite limited resources and high complexity, their persistence paid off. These employees are now the company's leaders.

During times of crisis, personal initiative becomes even more critical. But beware: cognitive diversity alone isn't enough. It must be guided by wisdom.

The Mistake Everyone Makes
Take initiative, yes. But not just anyhow.

Recent research in organizational psychology introduces a revolutionary concept: Wise Proactivity.

"It's not about doing something, but about doing the right thing, the right way."

Unreflective initiative can be perceived as:
Threatening to supervisors

Annoying to colleagues

Counterproductive to the context

What is Wise Proactivity?
Based on Sternberg's Balance Theory of Wisdom, it rests on three pillars:

🧍 Intrapersonal 🤝 Interpersonal 🌍 Extrapersonal
Respect for one's own abilities, needs, and motivations Consideration of others, their relationships and emotions Understanding of the broader strategic and institutional context
The 4 Pillars of an Effective Initiator
1. Agency & Motivation
A study of Italian government employees during a major financial reform found these two factors to be the most decisive. 75% of initiators showed high motivation.

2. Adaptability
The ability to adapt to change is a key enabler, especially for individuals with moderate traits.

3. Social Legitimacy
Support from colleagues and supervisors is crucial. Individuals with low agency can reach 88% likelihood of initiative if they enjoy strong social legitimacy.

4. Wisdom & Political Skill
Both are major predictors of wise proactivity.

Enablers of Initiative in the Workplace
Initiative doesn't depend solely on individual traits. It's enabled by:

Personal resources: persuasion skills, job enthusiasm

Organizational resources: social interaction, organizational support for change

Decision-making autonomy

The Key to Success
"He who takes initiative wins" is a profound truth. But victory doesn't come from just any initiative. It comes from wise, thoughtful initiative that considers context, others, and self.

Initiative opens doors to professional success, innovation, and progress. But the most impactful initiative combines courage, social intelligence, and deep contextual understanding.

In a Constantly Changing World
Initiative isn't an option – it's a necessity.

But wise proactivity is what makes the difference between "doing something" and "doing the right thing, the right way."

The Time is Now
Ask yourself these 3 questions today:

What am I waiting for?

What's the right thing to do, in this context?

How can I do it with wisdom and impact?

Your Turn!

You negotiate every single day without even realizing it.

Every team meeting, every email about a deadline, every conversation with your manager—yes, that is negotiation.

The real question isn’t "Do you negotiate?"
It’s "Are you negotiating effectively ?"

So, what exactly IS negotiation ?

It’s not just a formal boardroom battle between two companies.
Negotiation is a strategic dialogue aimed at reaching an agreement—whether commercial, operational, or even personal.

But here is the secret that truly successful negotiators know:
The goal isn't just to take what you want.
It's to build bridges that last. Great negotiation protects relationships and creates long-term value, not just quick wins.

Why does mastering this completely change your career trajectory?

🔹 Salary & Benefits: Did you know that the lifetime earnings difference between those who negotiate their offers and those who don't can reach 20-30%? One skill can change your entire financial future.

🔹 Closing Deals: In business, the loudest voice doesn't win. The most aware and strategic voice does. One well-negotiated contract can define your company's next decade.

🔹 Conflict Resolution: Workplace disagreements aren't a problem—they are an opportunity. A skilled negotiator turns conflict into win-win solutions without burning bridges with colleagues.

🔹 Defining Your Role: Who decides your career path? You, or someone else? Negotiation gives you the power to architect your own job scope and growth opportunities.

The Hard Truth You Might Not Know

Negotiation is NOT a talent you are born with.
It is a skill—built through training, self-awareness, and strategy.

Here is the biggest secret: Good negotiation doesn't just speed up your decisions; it uncovers hidden value you didn't even know was on the table.
Yes, you are leaving money and opportunities behind every single day just because you aren't asking for them.

Ready to start your journey toward mastery? Start with these 4 pillars:

✅ Listen more than you speak – The best negotiators hear what isn't being said.
✅ Know your true value – Before you ask, know exactly what you deserve.
✅ Always aim for Win-Win – Sustainable solutions come from mutual satisfaction.
✅ Practice relentlessly – Like any muscle, negotiation gets stronger with use.

Let’s hear your story:

Have you ever successfully negotiated a salary raise? Or closed a major project deal against the odds?

Drop your experience in the comments below – your story might just inspire someone else to take that leap!

THE ULTIMATE RESEARCH BLUEPRINT: FROM IDEA TO Q1 PUBLICATION

Calling all Master's students, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers!

If you are tired of feeling lost in the labyrinth of academic publishing, this post is your lifeline. Based on years of hard-won field experience, I have condensed the entire research journey into 9 powerful pillars.

Save this post. Screenshot it. Share it with your lab mates. Let's dive in!

WHY THIS GUIDE MATTERS

Success in academia is not about luck or raw intelligence. It is a structured methodology, a commitment to excellence, and smart resource management. Here is exactly how to navigate the marathon from your first idea to a prestigious Q1 publication.

PILLAR 1: CHOOSING YOUR SUPERVISOR AND TOPIC (The Make-or-Break Decision)

Selecting the Right Supervisor:

Check their academic track record (H-index, Q1/Q2 publications).

Verify their experience in mentoring PhD students to completion.

Assess their resources (lab equipment, funding, access to databases).

Golden Rule: Reach out to their current and former students. Ask the hard questions: Is their style supportive or toxic? What is the average thesis duration? How many of their students publish in top-tier journals? You need a collaborative partnership, not a master-disciple hierarchy.

Selecting a Winning Topic:

Ensure a genuine "Research Gap" exists. Can you add novel scientific value?

Avoid over-saturated topics where meaningful contribution is nearly impossible.

If the topic is highly niche, brace yourself to carry 90% of the responsibility, and confirm your supervisor has the expertise to back you up.

PILLAR 2: SYSTEMATIC BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESEARCH

Essential Search Engines:

Google Scholar (free and comprehensive).

Scopus (premium, available via institutional access).

Connected Papers / Research Rabbit (AI-powered tools to map article networks).

Boolean Operator Mastery:

Use AND to narrow: "Phosphogypsum" AND "Biotransformation".

Use OR to broaden: "Mental silver" OR "Sulfur recovery".

Use NOT to exclude: Phosphogypsum NOT Agriculture.

Use quotation marks " " for exact phrase matching.

Reading Priority:

Start with Literature Reviews published in Q1 journals (ideally within the last 2-3 years). They give you the big picture.

Mine their reference lists to expand your sources, and use the "Cited by" feature to find newer papers building on that work.

PILLAR 3: UNDERSTANDING JOURNAL RANKINGS (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4)

Q1 = Top 25% of journals in the specific field (highest quality and impact).

Q2 = Next 25%, and so forth.

Rankings depend on Impact Factor, H-index, citation counts, and peer-review reputation.

Why Focus on Q1?

For Reading: You learn advanced methodologies and the strictest scientific writing standards.

For Publishing: A Q1 paper skyrockets your CV and significantly increases future acceptance rates.

How to Verify Rankings:

Install browser extensions like SCImago SJR or Web of Science.

Visit the official SCImago site directly: www.scimagojr.com.

PILLAR 4: REFERENCE MANAGERS (MENDELEY AND ZOTERO)

Install the software, the browser web importer, and the Microsoft Word add-in.

Save any relevant article to your library instantly with one click.

While writing in Word, use "Insert Citation" to add references automatically.

At the end, use "Insert Bibliography" to generate your reference list in seconds.

The magic trick: You can switch citation styles (APA, Vancouver, etc.) instantly to match any journal's requirements without manual re-typing.

PILLAR 5: CRAFTING YOUR PERSONAL DRAFT AND OUTLINE

The Personal Draft (Zero Judgment Zone):

For every paper you read, write a mini-synthesis answering: Objective? Methodology? Key Results? Conclusions?

Connect the dots: Where do they agree? Disagree? Complement each other?

Write in whatever language feels natural (Arabic, French, English). This is YOUR private sandbox, never to be published.

Building the Outline:

Once you have collected 50-80 pages of summaries, you will naturally see thematic categories emerge.

Structure your outline logically: Introduction/Problem Statement, Literature Review, Methodology, Results, Discussion, Conclusion.

Share this outline with your supervisor before writing the final draft to get early, valuable feedback.

PILLAR 6: PUBLICATION STRATEGY AND PEER REVIEW

Selecting the Right Journal:

Target Q1 journals in your niche and read their recent issues.

Calculate the average "Submission to Acceptance" time by checking the "Received" and "Accepted" dates on the last 20 published papers. Avoid journals that take over 6 months if you are on a tight schedule.

Following Author Guidelines:

Scrutinize every detail: word limits for abstracts, reference formatting, figure presentations.

Cite papers from your target journal and other Q1 sources to signal relevance and quality.

Navigating Peer Review:

Understand the stages: Initial Check, Under Review, Major/Minor Revisions, Acceptance.

Embrace reviewer comments with a growth mindset. They are there to polish your work. Respond meticulously and resubmit on time.

PILLAR 7: RESPONSIBLE AI USE IN RESEARCH

When to Use AI:

As an assistant, never as a substitute: for language enhancement, paraphrasing, brainstorming, and exploring related papers.

When to Avoid AI:

Writing the entire paper for you.

Generating fabricated data or "Fake References" (AI hallucinations).

Avoiding Plagiarism:

Golden Rule: Never adopt an idea from a single source. Synthesize ideas from multiple references and rewrite them in your unique voice.

If you use AI for paraphrasing, double-check that the output reflects your genuine understanding.

Run your final draft through plagiarism detection tools (like Turnitin) before submission.

PILLAR 8: TIME MANAGEMENT AND STRESS CONTROL

Mastering Your Schedule:

Dedicate a daily slot for "Deep Work" (even 20-30 minutes) completely free of phones, emails, and social media.

Apply the 23-Minute Rule: The first 23 minutes are the hardest due to mental resistance. Push past it, and you will enter a "Flow State" of peak productivity.

Avoid Multitasking – it slashes productivity by up to 40%.

Handling Academic Stress:

Adopt the "Duck Model": On the surface, appear calm and serene, but underwater, paddle furiously. Don't let internal stress affect your external interactions.

Accept that academia is a long haul. Remember, 90% of PhD students ultimately succeed.

Never hesitate to seek help. Changing supervisors or topics might be the healthiest decision if you are stuck for years.

Effort Distribution Over 3 Years:

Year 1: 70% Reading, 20% Preliminary experiments, 10% Writing.

Years 2 and 3: Shift focus to experiments and data analysis while maintaining consistent writing.

Final Year: Concentrate on final analysis, conclusion, and full manuscript revision.

PILLAR 9: AVOIDING FATAL RESEARCH MISTAKES

Starting without a clear topic direction.
Fix: Conduct a thorough preliminary literature search before committing.

Choosing a supervisor incompatible with your goals.
Fix: Interview their former students to understand their supervision style.

Ignoring journal classifications (Q1-Q4).
Fix: Always check the ranking using SCImago or Web of Science.

Relying on fake or non-existent references.
Fix: Verify every source using reliable academic databases.

Committing plagiarism.
Fix: Always synthesize ideas from multiple sources and paraphrase effectively.

Delaying writing until the very end of your PhD.
Fix: Write daily, starting from day one, even if it is just rough notes.

Neglecting reference management tools.
Fix: Master Mendeley or Zotero early to save hundreds of hours.

QUICK GLOSSARY OF KEY TERMS

Artificial Intelligence (AI): Human intelligence simulation by machines.

Bibliographic Research: Systematic search for scientific sources and references.

Literature Review: Comprehensive summary and analysis of previous studies in a field.

Research Gap: An underexplored area in the existing scientific literature.

Q1 Journal: The top 25% of journals in a discipline based on quality and impact.

Impact Factor: A metric measuring the average number of citations to articles in a journal.

Peer Review: The evaluation of a manuscript by independent, subject-matter experts.

Plagiarism: Using others' ideas or texts without proper attribution.

Feedback: Constructive commentary aimed at improving your work.

Reformulation / Paraphrasing: Rewriting an idea in a new style without altering its meaning.

Flow State: A state of complete immersion and focused concentration on a task.

Deep Work: Extended, distraction-free concentration on cognitively demanding tasks.

FINAL TAKEAWAYS

Academic success is a learned craft. It demands an organized methodology, unwavering quality, and strategic time management.

Systematic reading of Q1 sources + progressive writing + targeted publishing = an outstanding academic trajectory.

AI is a powerful assistant, but it must never replace your critical thinking. Always be transparent about its use.

Your mental health and work-life balance are the true pillars of long-term sustainability and success.

Scopus (accessible via votre institution).

Utilisez AND pour affiner : "Phosphogypsum" AND "Biotransformation".

Utilisez OR pour élargir : "Mental silver" OR "Sulfur recovery".

Utilisez NOT pour exclure : Phosphogypsum NOT Agriculture.

Conclusions ?
