The Malaga Story from our very own 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐢...

The term “sport” is hard to define. Theoretically, Wikipedia defines it as an act of some players coming together to compete with each other within the confines of a set of agreed upon rules and regulations providing enjoyment to participants and entertainment to spectators. But, in reality, sport is much more than that.
Sport, my friends, is an experience of deep human emotions on a roller coaster ride of ups and downs as the game ebbs and flows. People who have played sports long enough will tell you that there is something magical about savoring the heights of success one moment only to be left forlorn, picking up the broken pieces, in the deep valleys of loss the very next moment.
Sport, my friends, is a great leveler showing us both the peaks of success and deep valleys of loss in a span of days, sometimes, hours. Ask a soccer team who played super competitive, sweating it out for 90 minutes equaling or bettering the score for the most part of 90 minutes, only to have the game snatched away through a few penalty kicks in the last five minutes.
Sport, my friends, is a great teacher – teaching us how to respect others when we win and respect ourselves when we lose. It takes a humility to remain dignified when you succeed and courage to remain strong when you lose. That is what sport teaches us. And, in a team sport, it takes not only desire, determination, discipline and self-sacrifice but also a great deal of love, fairness and respect for our fellow teammates as well as opponents. 𝐏𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐧, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞?!
That – even if you don’t win, how can you lose – is the one-line summary of Heritage CC proudly representing Luxembourg, and returning with a fabulous performance in European Cricket League (ECL 2024) – the fourth edition of the T10 tournament, organized annually by European Cricket Network (ECN). The ECL brings all the domestic champions of Europe together in a Champions League format with the 2024 edition having 35 participating champion clubs. Naturally, as this is a pool of local champion clubs, the games were intense with no team giving an inch to their opponent, and therefore, fiercely competitive but fairly contested. Heritage CC would like to thank their sponsors – Arca Properties Luxembourg and Tony Whiteman, Independent Director – for their unwavering support to the club enabling such an experience feasible and the ECN Network for organizing and allowing us to participate.
𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐂, 𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐤𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐕𝐢𝐣𝐡, qualified to represent Luxembourg in ECL by winning the Pete Mitchell (PM) cup held in July-August 2023 at our beloved Pierre Werner Cricket Ground (PWCG) in Luxembourg, and was pooled in Group A of ECL along with Denmark, Italy, Hungary and Croatia, some of these countries ranked significantly higher than Luxembourg. ECL 2024, Group A – played from Feb 26, 2024 to Feb 28, 2024 at the beautiful Cartama Oval, in Malaga, Spain – the team made Luxembourg proud by winning three out of the four league games resulting in tied points amongst Denmark, Italy and Luxembourg with only Net Run rate (difference of average runs scored vs. conceded by a team) separating the three. During the league stage, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, Italy, by a narrow margin of 2 runs in a thrilling encounter, but most notably, won against the group favorites Denmark by a comfortable margin demonstrating the prowess of a growing and thriving Cricket talent in Luxembourg. It takes humility to remain dignified when you succeed. This team demonstrated exactly that appreciating the skills and abilities of their opponents, making friends both on and off the field. Winning games and hearts are not mutually exclusive, as commentators would say.
Subsequently, despite a great 95 off 30 balls from Hungary’s captain, Heritage CC won the eliminator against them setting up a virtual semi-final against Italy’s Jinnah Brescia. Sport, my friends, is a great leveler showing us both the peaks of success and valleys of loss in a span of days, sometimes, hours. Later that afternoon, four hours after winning the eliminator, Heritage CC lost the virtual semi-finals against Italy albeit not without a fight. It takes courage to remain strong when you lose.
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 about savoring the heights of success one moment, only to be left forlorn, picking up the broken pieces, in the deep valleys of loss the very next moment. A true roller coaster ride for the whole team, the team management, and most importantly, the team’s supporters, experiencing the deep human emotions as the tournament ebbed and flowed. They might have lost the virtual semi-finals, but remember – this is a team that is courageous, determined, disciplined and above all has a great deal of love and respect for fellow teammates as well as opponents.
