BREAKING๐จ Trump saw TV coverage saying he was going soft on immigration, got furious, and OVERTURNED ICEโs ban on pulling over cars โ after its agents killed two people in one week.
The ban lasted less than one day. On Wednesday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social that they "CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.'s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP! Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal's hands." He told agents to "be judicious, fair and smart."
On Monday around 7 a.m. in Biddeford, Maine, ICE tried to stop Johan Sebastiรกn Durรกn Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian national. DHS says he tried to flee and an officer, "fearing for public safety," opened fire. There is no evidence to support this. He was not the target of the operation. His neighbor said he was headed to work. He lived with his partner and their 3-year-old daughter. His partner posted that her "soul aches" and that she has no words for her pain.
Six days earlier in Houston, ICE officers shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, after pulling over his vehicle while looking for someone else. His brother Victor, who was in the van, said a person walked up to the window, said "Stop," and immediately fired.
None of the agents involved were wearing body cameras.
The ban on traffic stops came after Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine personally called DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and urged him to stop non-urgent vehicle stops.
Border czar Tom Homan later called it a "short pause," not a policy change.
Clearly a very, very short pause.
