July 27 is the birthday of Sosai Oyama. His 100th birthday fell on July 27, 2023. To celebrate that special 100th birthday, senior students including myself founded the Makoto Juku Karate Organization. Accordingly, July 27 of this year marked Sosai Oyama's 103rd birthday and the 3rd anniversary of the Makoto Juku Karate Organization. To celebrate this special day, we hold the Lakmal's Challenge - XXVI Championship on a date close to it. As I announced during the "Lakmal's Challenge - XXVI" championship held on July 26, 2026, we would like to inform everyone that the Makoto Juku organization will henceforth be known as KYOKUSHIN MAKOTO JUKU. We are also proud to introduce our new Kanji logo featuring this name. It was the unanimous opinion of my teachers who taught me Kyokushin karate and my fellow instructors that, as someone blessed by Sosai Oyama, I possess the necessary qualification to do so. We look forward to the support of all relevant parties as our team moves strongly forward in Kyokushin, full-contact karate.

Lakmal's Challenge: Full-Contact Karate Championship 🏆

"Lakmal's Challenge" is a premier Full-Contact Karate Championship founded by Jukucho Lakmal Fonseka (Founder of the Makoto Juku Karate Association). He began his organizing journey at age 21 with an inter-branch tournament in 1993, followed by provincial championships (1996–1997) and All-Island novice tournaments (1998–1999).

Building on this experience, the official "LAKMAL'S CHALLENGE" was launched on January 30, 2000, at the Maharagama Youth Services Center. Except during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been held annually across major cities in Sri Lanka, based on three core pillars: Confidence, Spirit, and Unity.

Key Highlights & Legacy 🏆

Organizational Evolution: The championship has spanned three karate organizations: Byakuren (1st–8th editions), Shidokan (8th–22nd editions), and Makoto Juku (23rd edition to present).

International Milestones: The landmark 10th, 20th, and 25th editions were successfully held as International Championships, with future plans to host events abroad.

Notable Champions: Leelarathna Hewawasam was the historic first champion, while J.K. Dharmaratne remarkably secured the title three times.

The Competitor Motivation: Though cash prizes are sometimes awarded, fighters compete primarily for the immense prestige and recognition the tournament brings to their martial arts careers.

The Upcoming 26th Championship (2026)

The Makoto Juku organization was officially founded on July 27, 2023, to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Full-Contact Karate pioneer Sosai Masutatsu Oyama. To honor his legacy, the championship is now held every July.

Accordingly, the 26th "Lakmal's Challenge" is scheduled for July 26, 2026, at the Kegalle Indoor Stadium, bringing together multiple Full-Contact Karate organizations. The ultimate goal of Mr. Fonseka and his committee remains producing disciplined, strong, and unified martial artists for the nation.

On April 4th and 6th, 2026, the first grading of the year was successfully held at the Makoto Juku Honbu dojo in Kegalle with the participation of students from the Pindeniya, Dehiowita, Levangama, Walalgoda, and Pattampitiya Dojos.
Sensei - Priyal Sanjaka, Sensei - Ajith Kumaratunga, Shihan - Bandula Weerabandara, and Sensei - Ruwan Kumara served as the board of examiners. It is my good fortune that they have remained with me as my senior students for over 30 years. It is my joy to see them continue to be successful in all aspects of their lives..
