I’m never thought I’d say this, but Sailing to ROAM is sailing to ROME!!

We have a very special family member arriving in a few days and Rome was the best airport to collect her from.

We’re quite likely crazy for adding more complexity to this already challenging lifestyle, but not every decision always has to be perfect, and we’re following our hearts on this one.

We miss her and she was always meant to come, although she was meant to arrive about three months ago. She failed her first rabies vaccination and the vet didn’t notice until it was too late to fly. Thankfully her second vaccination worked, and after months of not being able to fly due to the war, she is finally on her way!

On our way to Rome we stopped off at a little island called Ponza. Italy really is one of my favourite countries in the world. Check out how cute this place was!

Actually how short I am among my boys now.

I thought it might be a good time to share a little update on what we’ve been up to lately because life aboard Roam has been pretty sweet.

Honestly, we’ve been having such a blast that I really haven’t felt much like being online or posting regularly — but I also know people enjoy following along and seeing where life takes us now and then.

The good news is… everyone is doing really well. We absolutely LOVE boat life and are so happy we made the decision to come back to it.

We’ve had a fantastic start to the season. We spent about a month in Malta and really got to know the island even more. Altogether we’ve probably spent 3–4 months living aboard there over the years, so it felt really special to be back. It was also the perfect place to get some last-minute boat jobs done before the season officially kicked off.

We bought a new dinghy, added a freezer, installed a new oven, and generally got Roam ready for the adventures ahead.

A couple of weeks ago we spent five days anchored out in some beautiful remote bays in Malta with a bunch of other kid boats. The kids spent their days on the beach, hiking, swimming, exploring, and just generally living their best lives while the adults soaked up the magic of slow boat days.

From there we set sail to the Egadi Islands off the northwest coast of Sicily and spent a few days in some incredibly remote anchorages and Christian celebrated his 12th bday. One very “boat life” moment involved having to go ashore for groceries and rubbish disposal… which turned into a 5km walk carrying backpacks AND garbage bags until we finally found a bin in town 😂

Of course we rewarded ourselves with a stop at a local bar for a drink… which somehow turned into several hours hanging out with friends we randomly bumped into along the way. And somehow, despite being on a tiny Italian island, we even managed to find a taxi back to the anchorage later that evening.

Boat life definitely isn’t always easy — I mean, when at home do you ever have to walk 5km carrying your rubbish? 😅 But it has been amazing, fulfilling, exciting, and everything we remembered it being… and honestly, even more.

This time around we feel deeply aware of just how lucky we are to be out here doing this with our kids, who are absolutely thriving in this lifestyle too. Hamish is loving his fishing, Jack’s right into his music and is now learning the guitar (he seem to take after Dave in that department) and Christian is just genuinely happier, being a kid, swimming, playing and having more time with mum and dad.

Right now we’re underway, sailing towards San Vito Lo Capo where we’ll stay for a few days before continuing along the coast towards Palermo. I’ll then fly to Spain for a few days for a work conference, and after that comes some VERY exciting news…

Delphi is FINALLY joining us on the boat 🐾❤️

After almost six months apart, we’ve finally figured out a way to get her over here despite all the flight complications and logistics. In just a few weeks, the Roam crew will finally be complete again — and we honestly cannot wait to have her little doggy paws aboard.

I’m betting these guys look a little different to last time you saw them! It’s been over three years since we called ROAM home, yet it feels like we never left!

I’m just glad they still fit in their bunks - just!

I think it’s safe to say we’ve slipped back into boat life like we never left!

When we sailed into Marina Di Ragusa, a cute little town in Sicily, three weeks ago, we were literally greeted on the dock by kids and teens waiting for our arrival. Word had got around that three strapping lads from Oz were arriving, and much to our delight, there was a marina full of teens waiting for us!

Last time we were in this marina, Hamish, who was only about 12, was among the eldest kids here, which was pretty normal for boat life.

This time, the marina is full of teenagers and, needless to say, it’s made for a very happy reintroduction to boat life.

I know, I know, we’re in the honeymoon phase, so I don’t want to speak too soon, but boat life has been pretty damn good so far. School is going well (for anyone who’s followed us for years, you know how much we struggled with that!) they are pretty much able to do it on their own, they have heaps of friends and one of them even has a girlfriend (I won’t say who, he’ll kill me). Dave and I have made friends and the kids have had heaps of freedom, which means so have we!

The kids have also picked up all their old hobbies. It’s like they’ve gone back to being kids again: reading, drawing, scooting, carving, making lures, building aeroplanes, having movie nights — everything they had stopped doing back in Australia. And because they have nowhere to escape to, we’ve all spent far more time together. I actually feel like doing this has given us our kids back, and I’m so grateful we have another chance to live this way again!

It’s so amazing to be back on Roam and getting straight back into meeting old friends and making new ones. It’s such a full circle moment knowing we all made it safe and sound. These photos are from Malta and Sicily our first two destinations for the winter.

After three years and three months of land life, we’re officially living on a boat again. Not just any boat, but the same boat we owed and sold and bought once more - ROAM. We splashed her yesterday, after three weeks on the hard, and we spent our first night aboard last night.

In typical boat life fashion, we had 40 knots of wind on anchor today but we held well and tonight it’s finally calm. We’re hoping for a little more sleep tonight, but the the moving bed is going to take some getting used to. Let the adventures begin!

Can you notice anything different about the boat this time?

There are few modes of transportation as fun as tuk-tuks! 🛺

Here in Sri Lanka, they’re everywhere, zipping around with ease and somehow making even the chaos feel exciting. That said, the roads are not for the faint of heart. The buses seem to be on a personal mission to break a speed record, hurtling toward you at what feels like 80 miles an hour… sometimes on the wrong side of the road 😳

Chaos, color, and a front-row seat to the heart of Sri Lanka.
