An indelible mark of Sri Lankan culture and Buddhist rituals, the Panchaturya is a collection of five types of musical instruments. Looking at its history and evolution, it has existed since ancient times as a means of expressing state honor and religious devotion.
Evolution of the Panchaturya
The earliest evidence of the Panchaturya is found in chronicles such as the Mahavamsa and the Deepavamsa, as well as ancient inscriptions. This musical instrument has been used to announce the arrival of the king or religious processions, especially since the Anuradhapura period.
The Panchaturya can be divided into two main parts:
1. Pooja Panchaturya: Used for Buddha Pooja and Thevavas in temples.
2. Mangala Panchaturya: Used for state ceremonies, weddings and auspicious occasions.

• Kandyan Period: The Panchaturya developed into a more organized craft during the Kandyan Period. The Esala Perahera of the Sri Dalada Maligawa represents its peak.
• Social Role: In the past, kings even bestowed "Nindagam" on these musicians, and this was a respected profession that was preserved from generation to generation.
