Remembering a Visionary Leader – Mr. K.N.P. de Silva
We pay tribute to one of the most influential and respected figures in the history of Mahanama College – our former Principal, Mr. K.N.P. de Silva, who served from 1976 until his retirement on February 5, 1986.
His decade-long leadership marked a transformative era in our school’s journey, characterized by major infrastructure development, academic achievements, and the strengthening of a vibrant school community.
When Mr. de Silva took office in 1976, Mahanama College was rapidly growing. He immediately prioritized the expansion of the school's physical facilities to meet increasing demands. Through his visionary leadership and the united efforts of parents and staff, several two-storey buildings were constructed, greatly enhancing the learning environment for both students and teachers. His approach was always collaborative, fostering a sense of ownership and unity within the school community.
Under his guidance, Mahanama College began to rise as a center of academic distinction. A defining moment came in 1981, when one of our students achieved 8th place island-wide at the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination and secured admission to the Faculty of Engineering. This milestone reflected the school’s growing commitment to academic excellence under his leadership.
Mr. de Silva believed that a strong school culture begins with unity. He worked closely with parents, staff, and students to build an inclusive and supportive educational environment. His efforts not only improved facilities and results, but also instilled a spirit of pride and responsibility in the Mahanama community. Upon his retirement in 1986, he left behind a legacy of dedication, development, and unwavering service that set the stage for Mahanama’s continued success.
Mr. K.N.P. de Silva was more than a principal – he was a builder of dreams and a pioneer of progress. His era defined what Mahanama College would become in the years ahead. His unwavering dedication to education, discipline, and values still echoes through the halls of our school.
Rest in peace, sir. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of every Mahanamian.
