Sir டொனால்ட் பிராட்மேன் அவர்களால் 'சிறந்த நடுவர்' எனப் போற்றப்பட்டவர்.
இங்கிலாந்தில் வழக்கமான மந்தமான வானிலையில் நடைபெற்ற ஒரு டெஸ்ட் போட்டியில், பந்து நகர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. ஃபிராங்க் செஸ்டர் நடுவராக இருந்தார், டான் பிராட்மேன் மட்டையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.
ஸ்டம்புகளுக்கு மிக அருகில் வந்த ஒரு பந்தை பிராட்மேன் ஸ்கொயர் கட் செய்ய முயன்றார். ஆனால் அவர் பந்தைத் தவறவிட்டார், மேலும் மைதானம் முழுவதும் இருந்த அனைவராலும் 'ஸ்னிக்' என்ற சத்தம் கேட்கப்பட்டது. பந்து மட்டையின் விளிம்பில் படவில்லை என்றும், விக்கெட் கீப்பரிடம் செல்லும் வழியில் ஆஃப் ஸ்டம்பின் வெளிப்புறத்தில் உரசியது என்றும் பிராட்மேனுக்குத் தெரியும். அனைவரும் அந்தச் சத்தத்தைக் கேட்டனர், மேலும் பலத்த முறையீடு செய்யப்பட்டது. பிராட்மேனைத் தவிர மற்ற அனைவரும் அது மட்டை பந்தைத் தொட்ட சத்தம் என்று நினைத்தனர்; பிராட்மேன் தன்னை விடச் சிறந்தவர், மேலும் நடுவரான செஸ்டர் அந்த முறையீட்டை நிராகரித்தார். 👏🏻👏🏻
அது மட்டையின் விளிம்பில் பட்ட ஒரு மாயை என்றும், மட்டையும் பந்துக்கு மிக அருகில் இருந்ததால் நடுவரும் தன்னை அவுட் என்று நினைத்துவிடுவாரோ என்று அஞ்சியதாகவும் பிராட்மேன் தனது கடிதத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தார். வேறு எந்த நடுவராக இருந்தாலும் தன்னை அவுட் என்று அறிவித்திருப்பார் என்றும் பிராட்மேன் மேலும் கூறினார். ஆனால் செஸ்டர் எல்லோரையும் விட மேலானவராக இருந்தார். செஸ்டரின் நல்ல முடிவெடுக்கும் திறனைப் பற்றிய வேறு அனுபவங்களும் அவருக்கு இருந்தன, ஆனால் இந்தச் சம்பவம் செஸ்டர் மற்றவர்களை விட மிகவும் மேலானவர் என்பதை உறுதிப்படுத்தியது.
In one Test match played in England in typical gloomy English weather the ball was moving. Frank Chester was umpiring and Don Bradman was batting.
Bradman tried to play a square cut to a ball which was very close to the stumps. But he missed ball and there was a snick heard by everyone all around the ground. Bradman knew that he had not nicked it and the ball had brushed the outside of off stump on the way to wicket keeper. Everyone heard the sound and there was a loud appeal. Everyone thought it was sound of the bat touching the ball except Bradman, who was the better himself and Chester who was umpire who turned down the appeal. 👏🏻👏🏻
Brahman letter mentioned that it was the fantast of the edges and he feared that umpire would also think that he was out, as the bat too was very close to the ball. Any other update, Bradman said further, any other umpire would have given him out. But Chester was above everyone. He had other experiences of good decision making by Chester too but this incidence confirmed that Chester was way above the rest.
