The northern city of Jaffna witnessed an electrifying display of chess mastery as FM Dinesh Rajan from India dominated the Jaffna International Chess Championship 2025 at Chelva Palace in Kokuvil. From December 3rd to 7th, the prestigious tournament brought together grandmasters, international masters, and talented players from across Sri Lanka and India for ten intense rounds of classical chess.
Dinesh Rajan delivered a commanding performance, scoring an impressive 9 points out of 10 rounds to claim the championship title. IM Anup Deshmukh from India secured first runner-up with 9 points, while Anandh S P K Arul, also from India, took second runner-up honors with 9 points. The tournament, organized by the Jaffna District Chess Association under Tournament Director Vimaleshan S and Chief Arbiter IA Tharindu Weerasekara, featured standard time controls of 90 minutes with 30-second increments.
The excitement continued with the Blitz Championship where FM Dinesh Rajan claimed another title with 8½ points, followed by CM Sivathanujan from Sri Lanka and GM Mikulas Manik from Slovakia, both scoring 8 points.
