Monastery of Saint Anthony the Great (Deir Mar Antonios Qozhaya)

Age: Founded in the 4th century (over 1,600 years old), making it one of the oldest Maronite monasteries in the world.

Location: Built into the cliffs of Lebanon's sacred Qadisha Valley.

Architecture: The church was built directly inside a natural cave within an overhanging mountain cliff, standing as a striking combination of raw geology and human stonemasonry.

Historical Fame: Housed the Middle East’s first printing press in the late 16th century.

The Cave & Exorcisms

The Grotto: Known as the "Cave of the Mad," it was a regional center for performing exorcisms and treating mental illness.

The Ritual: Afflicted individuals were secured to the cave walls with heavy iron chains to pray for healing through Saint Anthony. These chains remain on display today.

The Pots

Fertility Offerings: Women leave cooking pots inside the cave as faith offerings or tokens of gratitude when praying for children.

The Holy Rain: According to tradition, leaving a pot to catch the natural water dripping from the cave ceiling symbolizes a prayer answered.
