New committee appointed to beef up bodybuilding in Laos
A new executive committee of the Lao Bodybuilding Federation was appointed on Friday to oversee development of the sport from 2025 to 2029.
The Federation's new President is Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Dr Manothong Vongsay, and the Vice President and Secretary General is Mr Khamphaphayvanh
Vongsay. Other vice presidents, committee members and consultants were also appointed.
The meeting was attended by a member of the National Olympic Committee of Laos, Mr Somphou Phongsa, Mr Sichan Chittapanya from the Elite Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Sports, other ministry officials, and representatives of companies who regularly sponsor bodybuilding events.
The Federation will now train up bodybuilders for competition in international events taking place from 2026-2029.
The VIP Fitness Club, which is the Federation's main sponsor, has pledged to provide assistance valued at 618 million kip, while Electricite Du Laos will contribute 100 million kip.
Other sponsors have also offered financial support for the work of the Federation.
During the meeting, the Federation presented cash prizes to bodybuild-ers who won medals at international competitions held in 2025.
In recent years, the Federation organised the Lao bodybuilding championships in 2022 and 2024 and oversaw the training of bodybuilders taking part in the National Games last year.
In another boost to the sport, the World Bodybuilding Federation officially recognised four Lao referees.
Lao bodybuilders are raising their profile on the international stage and have won gold medals in
ASEAN, Asian, and world competitions in the last few years.
