✍️ I’m not someone who minces words or is afraid to say what’s on my mind. If I wanted Enzo gone, I’d say it boldly and repeatedly.
But under Xabi Alonso? I’m keeping Enzo Fernández 1000%. He’s going to be massively important in many ways.
That said, Enzo and Palmer as dual 10s won’t give Chelsea the best out-of-possession balance or the aggressive counter-press Alonso demands. Those details matter a lot in his system.
I also don’t think Enzo should be dropped deeper permanently. Alonso’s compact structure can actually hide some of his weaknesses in the pivot. His defensive line stays close to midfield, defenders are encouraged to jump out, help press, mark tightly, and attack second balls. If the space between the lines stays compact, an Enzo-Caicedo pivot can absolutely work.
Another reason Chelsea need a different profile at 10 is because the team lacks someone who attacks space and stretches defenses consistently. Too many players want the ball to feet.
Now about the contract situation: personally, this shouldn’t even be panic-worthy. Whether Enzo signs or not, he still has SIX years left on his deal. What’s the rush?
I want him to renew if the demands fit within the club’s wage structure. But if the club has to break the structure for one player? That’s dangerous territory.
Barcelona are the perfect example. Overspending on wages forced them into financial problems, salary cuts, and even situations where they couldn’t properly keep or re-sign Messi. They recovered by rebuilding the structure, and now they’re still competing and winning.
A football club must always be bigger than one player — even if that player is Messi.
Build a stable club first. Success follows after that.
