OPENING GATEBALL “gates” TO AFRICA COUNTRIES

As part of continued GATEBALL sport development, an online meeting was held on 28th August co-ordinated from Kenya and which brought together the following member countries;
1. Ivory Coast
2. Ghana
3. Uganda
4. Kenya - Secretariat

New Countries introducing GATEBALL and who were added to Group WhatsApp;
5. Benin
6. Togo

The saying "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together" never truer! The 1-hour session was informative, engaging and the social networking aspect crowned it all.

Conversations centered around inter-alia;

(a) Each country to ensure registration and compliance with government regulations to ensure GATEBALL is legally registered and relevant certification issued. The meeting did acknowledge the red-tape and bureaucracy in achieving this in most African countries. We shall keep trying!!

(b) Each country to continue promoting GATEBALL sport locally and organically.

(c) In coming months to have Regional gateball tournaments as a way of building awareness about the sport and exploring areas of partnership and collaboration with corporates, Embassies and relevant government ministries;
i. E.A. Gateball Championship {Kenya vs Uganda} in Uganda
ii. West Africa Gateball Championship – to be co-ordinated by Ivory Coast and which will rope in Ghana, Benin and Togo.

The common challenges across the Africa member countries include;

a. Access to Gateball Equipment (New and/or 2nd hand) that would trigger greater interest

b. Technical support – coaching and refereeing – which would require a structured engagement through the global federation (World Gateball Union- WGU)

c. Financial support – being a very new sport in Africa, the idea of exploring partnerships and collaborations with Japanese ( and other actively playing member countries globally) companies to develop marketing strategies of products/services in Africa through Gateball Sport is on the table.

Beyond Sports, GATEBALL being a cross-generational sport can be the “glue” that “fuels” community conversations around social impact, school physical education curriculum, wellness (physical, social and mental) and to marketers “route to market!” path.
We shall be having monthly online meetings just to keep the connect and the synergy. Unfortunately, Mr. Keiichi Imagawa, World Gateball Union (WGU) president couldn’t join us as had been planned earlier. God willing he shall make it next meeting.

We are opening GATEBALL “gates” in Africa; passing through a gate at a time!

INTRODUCING GATEBALL TO LAWN BOWLING COMMUNITY – NAIROBI CLUB

The invitation to introduce GATEBALL sport to members of Lawn Bowling was met with trepidation. We didn’t know much about Lawn Bowling and the connect between the two sports.

The warm welcome by Deputy Captain, Mr. Mathew Kiragu and his team “disarmed us” and the next 4-hours was an unforgettable experience; getting a chance to spread the “gateball gospel”, Learning Lawn Bowling and for the FIRST time in our gateball journey – on-boarding Mr. Anthony Mugwana – Africa Para-Cyclist Gold Champion – who has been itching for an opportunity to be part of GATEBALL community. A testimony that disability is not inability. At Kenya Gateball Federation (KGF) we have a strategic focus on sports inclusivity by incorporating visually impaired persons to the beautiful sport.

FIRST-HALF:
An introductory game of GATEBALL to the Lawn Bowling members.

SECOND HALF:
An introductory game of LAWN BOWLING to the Gateball team.

THE SIMILIRATIES:
• Target and Precision Focus: Both games require players to judge distance, speed, and trajectory meticulously on a flat lawn surface.
• Turn-Based Play: Competitors or alternating team members take sequential turns to advance their objectives.
• Tactical Interference: Both sports allow players to strike opponent balls with their own to gain a tactical advantage (displacing opposing bowls in lawn bowls versus hitting opponent balls in gateball)

At the end of the evening, it was another milestone for Kenya Gateball Federation (KGF) in exploring areas of mutual partnerships and collaboration. Twice a month we shall be having GATEBALL session at Nairobi Club. The Embassy of Japan in Kenya being round the bend – we shall seek their indulgence for a possible round-robin tournament between Embassy Staff, Nairobi Club team and Kenya Gateball team.

Sport remains apolitical and a universal language that brings people together regardless of age, gender, culture and even social status.

STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIP AND COLLABORATION – KENYA GATEBALL FEDERATION (KGF) and WORLD GATEBALL UNION (WGU)

The Gateball “gate” is opening in Kenya and Africa! The meeting between Kenya Gateball Federation president, Mr. Kevin Kibe and World Gateball Union president, Mr. Keiichi Imagawa on 24th July 2026 was a big milestone in positioning GATEBALL sport to Africa continent.

Kenya, as the secretariat co-ordinating GATEBALL development across Africa nations {Ivory Coast, Ghana and Uganda thus far) is proud to confirm that WGU is committed to support GATEBALL development at country level with strategic focus of eventually having an African Tournament.

An opportunity for African teams to participate in the upcoming World Gateball Championships 2027 in Thailand will not only be a benchmarking opportunity but an acknowledgement of GATEBALL sport entry in Africa!

WORLD REFUGEE DAY 2026 EDITION: PROMOTING SPORTS (Gateball) AS PLATFORM FOR PEACE & COHESION

20th June 2026:

World Refugee Day is an international observance held globally on June 20 every year to honor the strength, courage, and resilience of millions of people who have been forced to flee their home countries to escape conflict or persecution.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2000, the day provides a vital opportunity to build global empathy and raise awareness about the challenges faced by displaced individuals. It focuses on the fundamental right to seek safety, dignity, and a secure future.

At Kenya Gateball Federation (KGF) we have partnered with Ni Wakati Sports Africa, A local grassroot sports organization to commemorate the special day. We shall be introducing GATEBALL to the Refugee community appreciating that sports are apolitical and a universal language that cuts across age, gender, religion and social status.

Part of our day engagement will also involve supporting a tree planting initiative within the community. For Refugees, many of whom have lost homes, land and roots; planting a tree is deeply symbolic. Each tree planted will represent renewal, stability and a future restored.

Through promoting GATEBALL amongst the refugee community from various countries, we hope to break language barriers, fostering teamwork by allowing individuals from vastly different cultural and linguistic backgrounds to communicate and collaborate effectively building essential social networks.

Our mantra at Kenya Gateball Federation remains: "Gateball is chess on grass; it is won with the mind long before it is won with the mallet."

GATEBALL “gates” opening in GHANA

GATEBALL is one of the Emerging Sports that is rapidly transforming the global landscape, blending physical agility with digital entertainment and enhanced accessibility. We are organically developing the sport across Africa with Cote d’ Ivoire, Uganda, Ghana and Kenya taking leads in developing the sport in their respective countries.

Thanks brother Samuel Gyasi in Ghana for opening GATEBALL “gate” and exploring areas of blending the rich African socializing culture, dance and Gateball session.

Part of Ubuntu spirit is regular touch base across all Africa member countries and having a laugh and chat on areas that can accelerate GATEBALL development.

STRENGHENING FEDERATION’S GOVERNANCE STRUCTURES: KENYA GATEBALL FEDERATION (KGF) ROUND-TABLE INVITATION BY SPORTS MINISTRY

The Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund (SASDF) is a department within Ministry of Sports mandated to provide funding to support the development and promotion of sports and arts, and the promotion of social development

At Kenya Gateball Federation (KGF), we remain humbled at the invitation amongst over 100 registered federations to be part of stakeholder’s engagement on various issues inter-alia;

a. Governance structures that make it easier to apply for government funding

b. Financial processes that ensure compliance with laid out procedures as per public finance management regulations, 2018.

c. Exploring areas of mutual partnership and collaboration between Sports Ministry and federations.

We sort and got audience with Ministry leadership regards Customs and Taxation exemptions on imported of Sports Equipment. This remains critical to GATEBALL development.

Our submissions touched on Sports Diplomacy and Sports Tourism appreciating that Sports is apolitical and a universal language that cuts across gender, religion and even social status!

We are making small steps and BIG strides in packaging and positioning GATEBALL brand in Kenya. God willing Africa shall be a major stakeholder by 2028 and yes, a continental championship may just be the icebreaker.
