When Susan Kangai, a 26-year-old single mother, looks at the young people in Mathare, she sees potential—not problems.

Determined to create opportunities, she has been mentoring youth through photography, photo editing, and digital literacy training.

Many young men in our community face unemployment and are vulnerable to crime and drug abuse.

With support from SHOFCO's Economic Empowerment Program and computers donated by Connection Ubuntu, we are providing practical skills that offer a different path.

Today, Susan awarded certificates to our first cohort of trainees.

These young men now have skills that can help them earn an income and build brighter futures. This is what community transformation looks like.

Today, on the Global Day of Play, the Center for Sports and Growth and its community coaches celebrates the trans-formative power of play in the lives of young people.

Many youth in our communities face challenges such as drug and substance abuse, exclusion, environmental degradation, limited access to sexual and reproductive health information, and unsafe sporting environments. These barriers often prevent them from reaching their full potential and participating meaningfully in society.

Through Purposeful Play and Sports for Development methodologies, the Center for Sports and Growth uses games and sport as tools for learning, inclusion, and social change.

By creating safe and engaging spaces, we educate young people on safeguarding, inclusion, environmental awareness, SRHR, and positive life choices.

As a result, young people gain confidence, knowledge, leadership skills, and a stronger sense of belonging, while communities become more informed, inclusive, and empowered.

On this Global Day of Play, we reaffirm that play is not just recreation it is a powerful pathway to positive community transformation.

Every week, young people in Mathare walk into our computer lab with big dreams but limited access to technology. Many have never had the opportunity to develop the digital skills that are increasingly essential for education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

The digital divide remains a significant challenge for young people from under-served communities. Without access to computers, digital learning opportunities, and practical skills training, many are at risk of being left behind in an increasingly digital world.

Through our Digital Literacy Program, the Center for Sports and Growth is providing young people with hands-on training in computer skills, online learning, digital communication, and technology use.

A talented young person in Mathare has the creativity to succeed—but too often lacks access to the technology needed to develop marketable digital skills.

At the Center for Sports and Growth, we are changing that. Thanks to the generous support of Connection Ubuntu, our computer lab has been equipped with donated computers that will strengthen our economic empowerment programme, where young people gain hands-on skills in photography, videography, and video editing.

This is more than a donation of computers—it is an investment in opportunity, creativity, and brighter futures for young people from under-served communities.

Every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy, confident, and free from the harms of drugs and substance abuse.

Too many young people face pressure from drugs, violence, and negative influences without having safe spaces to learn, play, and build life skills.

At this year's East Africa Cup, the Centre for Sports and Growth proudly led interactive drug and substance abuse awareness sessions for the third consecutive year.

Using the Purposeful Play methodology, we engaged children through fun, games, and meaningful conversations while introducing this approach to 10 participating organizations equipping more coaches and youth leaders with practical tools to educate through sport.

The result? Hundreds of smiling faces, active participation, powerful discussions, and more organizations inspired to use sport as a platform for positive change.

Every game can teach a life lesson. Every coach can change a life.

Through the Center for Sports and Growth Goals for Inclusion League, we are bringing refugees and host community girls together, creating spaces where teamwork builds understanding, respect, and lasting friendships.

After attending a Purposeful Play training, Coach Rio brought fun educational games back to the community to help address the exclusion of persons with disabilities.

As our Goals for Inclusion League continues every weekend, Coach Rio uses these games on the sidelines to spark conversations, challenge stereotypes, and promote inclusion among players, coaches, and spectators.

Through the power of play, we are building communities where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
