COMBATING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN SPORTS
Yesterday evening, the GPIC CEO Ms Diana Watila and Lorna Tanui Incharge of Outreach and Sensitization held a Crucial inclusive discussion with the County Assembly of Elgeyo Marakwet led by the Speaker, Hon. Lawi Kibire,joined the County Assembly Committee on Sports, Youth Affairs, Culture, Children, and Social Services along with the County Executive departments of Sports, Youth Affairs, Culture, Children, Social Services led by the CEC Hon Michael Kibiwott,Education and Technical Training represented by the CEC Hon Purity Koima and the Gender Advidor to the office the Governor Hon.Winnie Kanda.
The discussions focused on establishing a multi-agency framework to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in sports, ensuring a safe and supportive environment where both men and women can thrive.
Elgeyo/Marakwet County, a sports hub, has sadly witnessed some of the most shocking cases of GBV, with prominent athletes falling victim to these heinous acts. These tragedies underscore the urgent need for action to tackle this menace and protect our athletes.
The meeting identified key issues surrounding gender-based violence in sports and explored potential areas for collaboration between Elgeyo/Marakwet County and GPIC to create an equitable and safe sporting environment for all.
