KENYA GRANNIES (masters) FOOTBALL FEDERATION – KGFF & KENYA WALKING FOOTBALL FEDERATION (KWFF) – COLLABORATING TO ENGAGE ELDERLY WOMEN IN SPORTS.

It is often said “collaboration happens at the top. Competition happens at the bottom”. This is never truer and moreso in our sports eco-system where team work, team synergy and fan experience are at the center of our engagements.

Formed last year (2025), KGFF continues to inspires elderly women in the community driving SGBV conversations, economic empowerment and mental health awareness campaigns - all through football. Their participation in the 2nd edition of Grannies International Football Tournament (GIFT) in March 2025 was roundly appreciated by all Kenyans. Needless, Nairobi is set to host the 3rd edition of GIFT next year (2027). KGFF maintains strong grassroot presence in the space of traditional football.

Kenya Walking Football Federation (KWFF) represents a slower version of traditional football. A low-impact and non-contact sport which attracts both gender, aged +50 years and above. KWFF is a 6 vs 6 game played for 30 minutes and with slightly relaxed rules that includes inter-alia; rolling substitutions, no off-side rules, no above-the-waist ball, no throw-balls et al.

THE CONVERGENCE

Whether traditional football or walking football - both KGFF and KWFF serve the same constituency – elderly citizenry. It is not hard to find same persons participating in both sessions. Do we mind? No! indeed the more regular physical exercises in older persons the greater the mitigation against non-communicable diseases (NCD’s).

SPORTS EVANGELISM

When the invitation came from Football Legend Musa Otieno – the event organizer – and Nairobi Chairperson of KGFF, Phoebe Nandwa – to grace the occasion, quickly remembered the scriptures in 1st Corinthians 9:24-25 that encourages training with discipline to win a lasting prize. The theme of the Grannies tournament aptly captured our guiding scripture verse at KWFF: Play. Praise. Purpose.

CONIFA JAMBOREE – KENYA EDITION 2026 {August 11th – 16th}

Whilst KWFF will have Deaf Walking Football team driving sports inclusivity, KGFF will have a grannies team appreciating that sports cuts across age, religion and even social status. This is the beauty of CONIFA – bringing together grassroot football experience.

CONIFA “no limits” PLATFORM “walks” TOGETHER WITH KENYA WALKING FOOTBALL: SPORTS INCLUSIVITY FOR DIFFERENTLY ABLED PERSONS.

CONIFA (Confederation of Independent Football Associations) views grassroots sports as the foundation of cultural inclusion, peacebuilding and human connection. By providing a global platform for minorities and displaced people, CONIFA treats grassroots football as a way to celebrate identity, foster community resilience, and give a voice to marginalized groups. CONIFA's "No Limits" platform drives football events for differently-abled players providing platform for recognition and appreciation.

Walking Football is a low impact, non-contact sport that provides a platform for social networking, mitigating non-communicable diseases (NCD’s) whilst engaging the community with a platform for regular physical exercises. At Kenya Walking Football Federation (KWFF) one of our focus areas has been sports inclusivity through engaging differently abled persons;

(a) Deaf Community:

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people participate in sports at all levels, with the Deaflympics providing a major international platform for competition. Deaflympics is the second oldest international multi-sporting event in the world. Since July 2025 the deaf community team has become part of our weekly walking football sessions, playing together and over time we created a 10-minutes sign-language lesson that continues to close the gap between hearing and hard-of-hearing participants. The deaf community faces significant barriers in accessing information about non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and preventive measures, leading to health disparities. These barriers include communication gaps & limited access to healthcare services tailored for sign language users.

(b) Visually Impaired community:

08th December 2025 will remain humbling and memorable to KWFF (and to myself as an individual) as we introduced Walking Football amongst the visually impaired persons. My brother Charles Waitherero - The president of Kenya Sports Association for the visually impaired (KESAVI) explained that blind Football is a Paralympic sport and locally played in Kenya. Through KESAVI people who are blind and visually impaired are empowered to experience quality of life, changing opportunities and social integration through sports. Another global FIRST from KWFF – bringing together visually impaired persons to walking football space as part of sports inclusivity.

CONIFA JAMBOREE KENYA: AUGUST 11th – 16th

For the first time CONIFA comes to KENYA this August and 2nd country to host the event after S.A. in 2022. You cannot afford NOT to be part of the cocktail of grassroot sports that will be HUGE on Sports Inclusivity! Keep it here for more details.

Sports is the “glue” that “fuels” community conversations.

ADDRESSING SOCIAL ISOLATION AMONGST OLDER PERSONS THROUGH SPORTS (walking football)

Social isolation and loneliness are critical public health issues. They have profound, measurable impacts on mental health, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, cognitive decline and even suicidal thoughts. lack of social engagement increases dementia risk – which frequently forces an individual into further isolation.

Walking Football, a low-impact and non-contact sport played by older persons (+50 years – both gender) is a platform of combating social isolation through regular physical exercises, encouraging team participation and identity and building healthy relationships amongst elderly citizens.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES – 15th MAY 2026:

This day is observed annually on 15th May and was proclaimed by UN General Assembly in 1993. It promotes awareness of issues relating to families and social & economic processes. At Kenya Walking Football Federation (KWFF) we were humbled to receive an invite from Missionary sisters of the holy family (Sp) – Kenya to introduce Walking Football to the community within Munyu Village – Gatuanyaga Ward, Kiambu County to the over 350 elderly citizens invited for free medical camp as part of day commemorations.

The response was amazing! The elderly folks regaling the audience with their sporting days of youth and nostalgic memories of volleyball, netball, football and athletics participation. Sports is the “glue” that “fuels” conversations within the community never truer.

A conversation that came up was on regular physical exercises as part of preventative health-care. Sports naturally fulfils the basic human need for belonging and trust by creating an environment that fosters psychological safety, teamwork, shared goals and lasting emotional support system.

WALKING FOOTBALL – MUNYU CLUB (c/o Missionary Sisters of the Holy Family - MSHF)

Thanks again Sister Cecily and team for welcoming KWFF. The plan? MSHF to start a walking football team by end of August 2026. Would you wish to support the missionary in getting started? From soccer balls, training bibs, first aid kit, jerseys et al – drop on them an e-mail: [email protected]. It will be a blessing to the community!

MOTHER’S DAY 2026: “walking the walk with WALKING FOOTBALL”

Walking Football is a non-contact and low-impact type of football played by +40-year-old women. A 30-mins game time that promotes regular physical activity, a platform for social networking and mitigating disease associated with ageing e.g. arthritis. Participation promotes independence, combats social isolation, increases confidence, and helps manage menopause symptoms and mental health.

Social Benefits of older women participation in Walking Football include inter-alia;

• Community & Support: Joining teams or clubs provides crucial social opportunities, combatting isolation.
• Sharing Experiences: Teammates often share experiences related to aging thus creating a supportive environment.
• Intergenerational Connection: Many opportunities exist to connect with younger generations through coaching, mentorship et al.

Psychological & Cognitive Benefits

• Improved Mood: Walking football decrease feelings of anxiety and depression.
• Mental Sharpness: Being a low-impact sport, walking football leans on mobility and co-ordination which boosts memory and cognitive function.
• Empowerment: Participation fosters a sense of identity and personal empowerment, challenging age-related stereotypes.

Kenya is probably the ONLY country amongst the over 120 walking football member countries globally that has more women than men in the space of Walking Football, current ratio being men: women at 35%:65%. Contributing factors being more women (especially +60 years and +70 years) are more health conscious than men and women are more likely to build stronger social networks and relations than men. To ALL the amazing women who are part of various Kenya walking football clubs – we salute you!

Do you have a group of women and would wish to register a Walking Football Club? Would you wish to join a club near you? Drop us an e-mail and we shall do the rest.

ENHANCING WALKING FOOTBALL BRAND VALUE THROUGH TOP CLASS COACHING AND REFEREEING: RICKY WEIR “walks the walk”

Coaching develops the talent and entertainment value of the sport, while refereeing maintains the integrity and legitimacy of the competition. Both are indispensable for creating a valuable, sustainable sports brand.

Kenya Walking Football Federation (KWFF) was registered in August 2024 and soon thereafter affiliated with the global federation – Federation of International Walking Football Association – FIWFA. We were humbled to receive Mr. Ricky Weir, FIWFA Director of Walking Football – Africa in October 2024 to formally launch Walking Football in Kenya. Kenya officially joined six (6) African nations and regionally warmly received by Rwanda within the CECAFA region.

Ricky Weir is a brand in sports eco-system. From being one of the most capped player, team captain, national team coach eventually making it to be Federation president – all in his home country, Jersey Islands. The enduring legacy of the 63-year-old legend is his agility, energy and synergy that has seen him rise to the position of top referee at FIWFA. Refereeing at the first and last game of 2025 walking football world cup in Spain remains one of the most memorable highlights of his career and a mark of the quality of Walking Football as a whole.

At Kenya Walking Football Federation, we value and appreciate coaching and refereeing as critical, intangible pillars that directly influence the brand value of sports. High-quality coaching drives competitive success and team reputation whilst effective refereeing ensures fair play and legitimacy. Kenya continues to be a beneficiary of both every time Ricky visits Kenya.

BRAND PACKAGING AND POSITIONING

A coach’s reputation serves as a benchmark for professionalism and success thus acting as conduits for brand partnerships. Players who treat referees with respect enhances the sport’s reputation as positive, disciplined activity increasing its appeal to sponsors.

As we organically continue to develop Walking Football in Kenya, we plan to again invite Ricky to Kenya towards the end of the year. We have shifted gears towards registration / affiliation of clubs and teams setting an ambitious target of 15-clubs by the end of August.

Will Kenya participate in the Walking Football World cup 2027 edition in France? Keep watching this space!

POSITIONING WALKING FOOTBALL THROUGH NETWORKING, PARTNERSHIP & COLLABORATION

Walking Football is a low-impact, non-contact 30-minutes type of football played by older persons (aged +50 years – both gender). At Kenya Walking Football Federation (KWFF) we are organically developing the sport and attracting (a) former sports personalities across different disciplines e.g. basketball, hockey, rugby, football, netball and volleyball and (b) community membership seeking a platform for social networking.

Our key objectives are;

(a) Promoting regular physical exercises amongst elderly citizenry.
(b) Providing a platform for social networking.
(c) Using sports as mitigating platform against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD’s). Our attention thus far has been on Diabetes and Dementia.

Locally we are affiliated to Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance of Kenya (NCDA-K) whilst globally we are affiliated to Federation of Walking Football Association (FIWFA) positioning KENYA as key stakeholder amongst the 7-countries in Africa and 124-countries globally engaging in Walking Football.

Strategic partnerships and networking are key. Thanks to SPORTYFM Kenya for warm invite to their launch event earlier this month. It was an opportunity to connect to industry players. Networking converts professional relationships into opportunities and acts as a catalyst by facilitating access to new clients, new partnerships and industry insights.

At Kenya Walking Football Federation (KWFF) our focus is on registering and affiliating clubs at county level, organizing local & regional championships and being part of the on-going continental conversations of organizing African Walking Football Cup (AWFC) by 2028. Our collaboration thus includes both state and non-state actors on the niche product – walking football – engaging an under-served constituency, older persons.

To achieve this, Connectivity, Competence, Credibility and Clarity (4 C’s) remain our guiding mantra.

Do you have a product and/or service that you would wish to align to a growing brand?

Do you have a team / club that you would wish to start playing walking football?

Drop us an e-mail and we shall do the rest!

KENYA WALKING FOOTBALL “WALKS” WITH RETIRED POLICE OFFICERS!

At Kenya Walking Football Federation (KWFF) our key objectives are;

(a) Promoting Regular physical exercises amongst elderly citizens.
(b) Social Networking
(c) Mitigating Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD’s)

Being a social sport and a low-impact & non-contact, WALKING FOOTBALL is increasingly gaining traction amongst organized communities e.g. religious institutions, member clubs, resident associations’ et al.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED POLICE OFFICERS (NAPOK) – NAIROBI CHAPTER

What a humbling experience it was being amongst retired police officers. Men and Women who served the country with diligence and now in their 60’s and 70’s. Many thanks to Nairobi Chapter chairman – Mr. Julius Waweru for hosting KWFF team. The demo session led by football legend (and walking football national coach) Tobias “Jua Kali” Ocholla was full of fun and laughter! Mr. Mureithi Ritho – Team Manager Donholm Eagles Walking Football club invited retired police officers residing in Embakasi East constituency to join their weekly training session at Donholm Primary School grounds every Saturday from 930am – 11am.

In our entourage was lawyer Mburu Machua – who has over the last ten (10) years been running weekly radio program called “know your rights”. He spoke passionately about the need for retired citizens to have civic education on succession planning, Asset (wealth) management and environmental conservation.

We also had Mr. Arabron (also known as “Rono” or “Jack”) Osanya – One of Kenyans known legends of theatre, acting and voice-overs; and over the last ten (10) years associated with Mother-In-Law T.V. program. The message? There are too many stories to tell – and right there we were told of a police officer who feigned sickness and headed to City Stadium for a Gor Mahia vs. Scarlet football game in 1984. Unbeknownst to him – his boss had left his station earlier to and rushed to the same game!

WALKING FOOTBALL is the “glue” that brings older persons together. We had an afternoon of walking football game, legal talk & health chat. Imagine a drama series of retired police officers taking us through memory lane of 1970’s and 1980’s?

TAKING CARE OF OUR LEGS: “WALKING THE WALK”

Walking Football provides a platform for older persons to walk around a field kicking a ball and thus exercising their legs. A low-impact, non-contact sport, Walking Football is a 6 vs 6 game played by +50 year olds (both gender) with regular physical exercises being one of the key objectives. At Kenya Walking Football Federation (KWFF), we prioritize physical exercises to encourage mobility and mitigating non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Why stretching your legs is important:

1. As you age, you must always keep your feet and legs strong.
2. When you grow older, you should not worry about gray hair, sagging skin, or wrinkles. Instead, you should take good care of your legs.
3. Strong leg muscles are the most important muscles and a marker of longevity.
4. Inactivity of the legs for two weeks will reduce leg strength by 10 years.
5. Studies show that people of all ages who remain inactive for two weeks can lose one‑quarter of their leg muscle strength, equivalent to aging 20 to 30 years.
6. If leg muscles are weak, even rehabilitation exercises will take a long time to restore strength.
7. Regular exercise, such as walking, is very important.
8. The entire body’s weight rests on the legs.
9. The body uses the feet to bear its weight. 50% of a person’s weight is in the bones, and 50% of the bones are in the legs.
10. The body’s largest and strongest joints and bones are in the legs.
11. Strong bones, muscles, and flexible joints form an "iron triangle" that supports the body’s most important loads.
12. 70% of your activity energy is burned in your feet.
13. The legs and feet are the body’s "center of movement."
14. The legs carry 50% of the body’s nerves, 50% of the blood vessels, and 50% of the blood flow.
15. A vast circulatory network connects the legs to the body.
16. Those with healthy legs and feet have smooth blood circulation; those with strong leg muscles have a strong heart.
17. Human aging starts from the feet and moves upward.
18. With age, the brain’s commands to the legs become less accurate and slower than in youth.
19. as people age, bone calcium will eventually be lost, so the elderly are prone to fractures.
Statistics show that 15% of elderly people die within one year after a thigh fracture!
20. Legs and feet age over time, but exercising them is a lifelong mission.
