The 3rd Confederation of African Cycling - < CAC > Para-Track African Championships concluded on 11 May at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja, Nigeria.

Visually impaired Kenyan cyclist Felistus Kaveva delivered a strong performance in the B category, winning 3 silver medals in the pursuit, sprint, and time trial events.

She was narrowly edged out by Nigeria’s Favour Omo Ojiaebu across all three races.

Ann Nekesa, alongside sight guide Julia Miringu, secured two bronze medals in the Women’s Individual Pursuit B and Tandem Sprint B events before adding another silver to cap a strong campaign for Team Kenya.

Team Nigeria 🇳🇬 topped the medal standings with 16 medals (9 gold, 5 silver, 2 bronze), followed by Egypt 🇪🇬 in second with 14 medals, while Kenya 🇰🇪 finished third overall with 9 medals.

The championships also served as a qualification and ranking event for both the Commonwealth Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, adding major stakes to every performance in Abuja.

🇲🇼 Tabitha Chawinga has been named in the Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels (UNFP) Best XI (Team of the Year) for the third consecutive year - 2024, 2025, and 2026 - further cementing her status among the elite players in women’s football.

Two trophies already in the bag this season for the Malawian forward after Olympique Lyonnais Féminin defeated Paris Saint-Germain Féminine 4–1 in the Coupe de France final on Sunday, securing Lyon’s record-extending 11th French Cup title.

Earlier in the campaign, Lyon also edged PSG 1–0 to lift the inaugural Coupe de la Ligue.

Lyon remain unbeaten in the Arkéma Première Ligue, finishing top after 22 matches to qualify for the championship playoffs.

They are now in pursuit of a historic quadruple as they chase a record-extending 19th league title and a ninth UEFA Women’s Champions League crown.

Coach Jonatan Giráldez’s side will face FC Barcelona Femení in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in Oslo on 23 May.

“I appreciate the fans, they motivate me a lot. They are the reason I won gold in the 1500m race,” said Mirriam Cherop after a brilliant performance at the 2026 Kip Keino Classic held at Nyayo National Stadium.

Kenya’s rising middle and long-distance sensation clocked 4:08.49 to win the women’s 1500m race in front of home fans, finishing ahead of Ethiopia’s Tadele Deseta, who posted a personal best of 4:09.55, while Uganda’s Nakaayi Halimah came third in 4:09.66.

With confidence growing and the support of Kenyan fans behind her, Cherop now shifts focus to her first-ever Commonwealth Games, set for Glasgow, Scotland from 23 July to 2 August 2026.

Nigeria’s Falconets are headed to the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after edging Malawi 3-2 on aggregate in the qualifiers.

Despite a 2-1 defeat away in the second leg, the first-leg 2-0 victory in Nigeria proved enough to seal qualification.

🇰🇪🏃‍♀️| Mercy Oketch eyes more records and medals.

“I’m always after records,” said Mercy Oketch after Kenya’s mixed 4x400m relay team shattered the African record with a historic 3:09.87 at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana — qualifying for both the final and the 2027 World Championships.

At just 23, Oketch continues to rise as one of Africa’s most exciting sprint talents. The 2025 World Relays bronze medallist is already Kenya’s national record holder in both the outdoor and indoor 400m.

Running alongside Mercy Chebet, George Mutinda and Kelvin Kiprotich Tonui, Oketch clocked a blistering 49.46s split in the mixed relay final — the 3rd fastest women’s split overall in the race.

Fastest women’s splits in the final:

🇺🇸 Paris Peoples – 49.19s
🇰🇪 Mercy Oketch – 49.46s

Before the final, she confidently declared:
“We mean business. We are coming for the medals. No mercy in Botswana.”

Kenya may have missed the podium, but Oketch left Botswana having stamped her name among the world’s elite quarter-milers.

Earlier this year, she became the first Kenyan woman to qualify for a World Indoor Championships 400m final, finishing fifth in a national record time of 51.25s.

She also holds the Kenyan outdoor 400m record of 50.14s set at the 2025 Kip Keino Classic.

Now, another big stage awaits.

Mercy Oketch is set to make her official Diamond League debut at the Shanghai Diamond League on May 16, 2026.
