A Thank You Speech to Pep Guardiola for His Impact on Manchester City
Good morning/after noon/evening everyone,
We are gathered here today to say thank you. Not just for trophies, not just for records, but for changing the way we see football. And the person we are thanking is Pep Guardiola.
Pep, when you arrived at Manchester City in 2016, you walked into a club with ambition but still searching for a clear identity on the world stage. What you built since then is more than a team. You built a standard.
Thank you for teaching us that football can be both beautiful and ruthless. Under your guidance, City stopped playing to avoid losing. We started playing to dominate. You gave us the philosophy of possession with purpose, pressing with intensity, and a belief that every pass, every movement, every second without the ball matters.
Thank you for your obsession with detail. We’ve watched you adjust formations at halftime, invent roles like the inverted fullback and false fullback, and turn players into better versions of themselves. John Stones became a ball-playing center back. Kyle Walker learned to tuck inside. Rodri became the heartbeat of the midfield. Phil Foden, a boy from Stockport, grew into a world-class attacker under your trust. You don’t just coach players, you develop people.
Thank you for the trophies, because they matter. The Premier League titles that were won with 100 points, with 98 points, with runs of 20+ wins in a row. The FA Cups, the League Cups, the Community Shields. And of course, thank you for 2023 - the year we lifted the Champions League, completed the Treble, and joined the list of clubs that have done it. For years we chased that night in Istanbul. You made it happen with calm, with planning, and with courage to play our game on the biggest stage.
But more than the trophies, thank you for the football. Thank you for the nights at the Etihad where the ball moved like it had a mind of its own. to be continued..
