After watching Zion Suzuki against Arsenal, I can confidently say Aston Villa may have found something special in this goalkeeper.
This was his Premier League debut against the reigning champions, and despite Villa losing 1-0, Suzuki showed qualities that you simply cannot ignore. He also made history by becoming the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in the Premier League. He played the full 90 minutes, made one save, conceded just one goal and finished with around a 6.5 rating.
But the numbers don't tell the full story. What really caught my attention was his confidence and distribution. Suzuki completed 29 passes at 65% accuracy, including some impressive 50-yard diagonals that showed how comfortable he is with the ball at his feet.
He also made a clean save from a Declan Rice header, and when Kai Havertz had a late one-on-one opportunity, Suzuki came off his line, stayed big and denied him. Of course, it wasn't a perfect debut. He had a couple of nervous moments, including flapping at an early corner and briefly spilling a Havertz shot.
But what impressed me was how he recovered and continued to show strong sweeper-keeper instincts, even racing outside his box to clear dangerous balls. And Saka's goal? Honestly, there was very little Suzuki could do about that close-range finish. For a goalkeeper making his Premier League debut against Arsenal, this was a very encouraging start.
If this is only the beginning, Aston Villa may have a serious goalkeeper on their hands.
