Enjoyed an amazing afternoon reuniting with fellow sports scholarship beneficiaries from Strathmore University during the Strathmore Sports Alumni event held last week.

The four years I spent at Strathmore as a student athlete in the volleyball team, Strathmore Jaguars, shaped me to become who I am today. It was great seeing my former teammates after a long time and to learn that they were excelling in various professional fields beyond sports.

We all agreed to make positive contributions to the sports scholarship programme to ensure Strathmore University continues churning out brilliant athletes both on and off the fields.

Mariam Metwally proudly wears three things whenever she is on the volleyball court–her trademark wide smile, a black hijab and unrivalled confidence that have always made her a joy to watch.

After dominating the African volleyball scene in the red stripes of Al Ahly and the white colours of Zamalek for a decade, Metwally added another feather to her cap when she joined Italian club UYBA Volley Busto Arsizio at the beginning of the 2025/2026 season. The historic move saw Metwally become the first African and Arab player to feature in the Italian topflight league—the Lega Volley Femminile A1.

“Forza!...Dai!...Ce la puoi fare!...Non mollare!” Lucilla Perrotta’s voice is loud and clear from the stands. The former Italian beach volleyball international player has been a consistent supporter for The Azzurre every time they have taken to the Al Gharafa courts in Doha at this year’s FIVB Beach Volleyball Under 18 World Championship.

And justifably so as her first born daughter Micol Lafuenti has been one of the standout performers in this year’s Under 18 World Championship playing alongside her new partner Sofia Bruzzone. Perrotta is a veteran of five World Championships and two Olympic Games (Syndey 2000 and Athens 2004) in a checkered 14-year beach volleyball career that also took in six European Championship medals including a gold medal in the 2002 edition.

There’s therefore a sense of pride when she watches her daughter Micol following in her footsteps, playing at her first junior World Championship at only 15 years old.

Bruno Romano Cosendey Marques has seen it all in 2025! From the pristine courts of Tashkent, Uzbeksitan where he represented Brazil at the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Under 19 World Championship to the hot and humid conditions of Doha, Qatar where he once again part of Brazil’s boys’ team at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Under 18 World Championship, it’s been a busy summer for Bruno.

It’s unfortunate that both tournaments didn’t yield quite the results the 17-year-old Bruno had expected, as Brazil were eliminated by eventual champions France in the Round of 16 in Tashkent while on Friday, the Dutch pair of Sven van Groenestein & Mees Huisman sent them packing in the Round of 24 following a 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 13-15) narrow loss.

Yet the disappointment of not medaling at the two events, at least by Brazil’s lofty volleyball and beach volleyball standards, is not putting Bruno down.

Saudi Arabia boys’ team needed a wild card to participate in the FIVB Beach Volleyball Under 18 World Championship but their performance in Doha so far, has been nothing short of inspiring.

To put into perspective, the pair of Ahmed Mafouz and Hadi Aljorfi, both only 16 years old, only started playing beach volleyball five months ago. During this induction period into the sport, the Saudi duo has featured in Zonal and Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Tours playing against seniors, way beyond their age.

The U18 World Championship is the first time they are playing against opponents of their age group and it’s been a roller coaster ride so far.

When Bakary Ensa Kanyi’s spike took a touch off USA’s Cash Essert’s block to confirm The Gambia’s 2-1 (22-20, 14-21, 15-12) win in their opening FIVB Beach Volleyball Under 18 World Championship match on Wednesday, wild cheers erupted from the bench and the few fans who had turned up at the Al Gharafa courts to support them.

It was a historic moment for the Africa Under 18 champions on many fronts. Firstly, it was their first win on their World Championship debut and secondly, to do it against USA, a beach volleyball giant, was a big statement.

Such was the ex*****on that Bakary and his partner Abdallah Bah had displayed all night, barely putting a foot wrong as they matched the American duo Spencer Smith & Cash Essert point for point. With every passing rally, their confidence went a notch higher and when it mattered most, the tie-breaker, they finally got the better of USA.

It’s difficult not to notice the Junk twin sisters outside the beach volleyball court. They are always together, their long blonde hair flowing majestically down their backs as they walk side by side or sit next to each other watching a match.

Life and recently beach volleyball, has contrived to ensure that Avery and Addison spend most of their time together. Their camaraderie off the court has morphed into a deadly partnership on the court and made them USA’s first choice pair for the Main Draw and one of the medal prospects at this year’s FIVB Beach Volleyball Under 18 World Championship in Doha, Qatar.
