WESTERN REGIONAL QUALIFIERS: Road to the AFRICA U17 Chess Championship Starts in Kakamega Social Services, Sports, Youth, Gender & Culture Department
The pathway to continental competition opens on 11th July 2026 at Mukumu Girls National School with the Africa U17 Championship – Western Region Qualifiers. Hosted under Chess Kenya and Kakamega County Chess Association, this event is the first step for juniors all over the Western Region aiming for the Africa U17 Championship.

TOURNAMENT DETAILS
- FORMAT: 6 rounds, Swiss system
- TIME CONTROL: 30 minutes per player
- CATEGORIES: Under 7, U9, U11, U13, U15, U17 Boys and Girls
- ELIGIBILITY: Open to all players under 17 Years Old
- ENTRY FEE: Ksh 800/= (Non- refundable)

- All participants receive CERTIFICATES
- Players scoring 2 points and above qualify for the NATIONAL FINALS
- Top performers advance into the U17 Championship Pathway toward the Africa U17 event

3rd Place: Bronze Medal
Best Schools Overall: Trophies
This qualifier matters because it connects regional-level play to the continental stage. For many WESTERN REGION juniors, it will be their first shot at representing Kenya beyond national boundaries.
FIDE - International Chess Federation
Coaches and parents should note the date and prepare players now. With 6 rounds and a 30-minute time control, endurance and opening prep will count as much as tactics.
