When I first started training nearly two decades ago, I pushed far beyond what my body was ready for.
My plan was poorly balanced.
I had little to no idea what I was doing.
This led to painful shoulder impingement.
That injury taught me one of the most important lessons that has helped me stay consistent for over a decade.
Learning from this lesson helped me safely progress to deadlifting over 600 pounds.
It also helped me achieve my dream physique goals through years of proper training.
It taught me the importance of training intelligently.
As I’m preparing for an Ironman 70.3 with little background in focused endurance training, that same lesson is speaking to me again.
Connective tissues need time to catch up to new stresses.
I can already tell this journey will require patience and putting any ego aside.
Just a reminder to train hard, but to also train smart.
It’s about the long game.
