1967 Toyota 2000GT
Japan's answer to the Jaguar E-Type and Porsche 911, the Toyota 2000GT was developed in collaboration with Yamaha and made its public debut at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show.
Low-slung and fastback in profile, the car's styling drew comparisons to contemporary European sports cars, with center-lock magnesium-alloy wheels and a long hood giving it a distinctly exotic presence.
Under that hood sat a 2.0-liter DOHC straight-six fed by three Mikuni-Solex carburetors, producing 150 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, and four-wheel disc brakes all came standard. Top speed was approximately 137 mph.
Production ran from 1967 to 1970, with only 351 examples built (roughly 15% of which were imported to the United States).
The model gained wider international attention when it appeared in the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice (two open-top versions were fabricated specifically for the production, since Sean Connery was too tall to fit in the standard coupe).
The 2000GT remains among the most sought-after Japanese collector cars, with well-documented examples regularly fetching well over $500,000 at auction.
